David Attenborough witnesses the moment a caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly!

Caterpillars are the larval stage of members of the order Lepidoptera. As with most common names, the application of the word is arbitrary, since the larvae of sawflies are commonly called caterpillars as well. Both lepidopteran and symphytan larvae have eruciform body shapes

From Micro Monsters with David Attenborough Season 1 Episode 1, "Conflict": Right beneath our feet is a secret world of disguise and espionage, social networking and courtship, rape and pillage, parenthood and relationships. Sir David Attenborough investigates how macroscopic residents outwit their enemies to survive.

Micro Monsters is a series narrated and hosted by Sir David Attenborough, who takes viewers deep into the world of bugs. Pioneering macroscopic techniques allow Attenborough to explore in unparalleled detail the intricate, sophisticated behaviours of fascinating creatures and the complexity of the environments they build and inhabit, in a world normally hidden from the human eye. Each of the three episodes explore a different aspect of the little-known lives of insects, from the deceptive defensive mechanisms harboured by spiders and scorpions, to the creation of colonies and how social arrangements develop.

I had no idea that the entire process of the crysallis becoming a butterfly took only eight days or so. This is even more amazing than I realized !

I wonder how absolutely amazed people were when they found out butterflies and caterpillars were the same creature. Like “WHAAAT? THEY DO WHAT NOW? AND IT TURNS INTO THAT???”

If ur from the USA, look into any way you can support butterfly species. Maybe you have a favorite butterfly, all u need is it’s host plant and it’s food plant. In a lot of cases, all u need is a local native oak tree and u can plant milkweeds that are native to where u live

Lantana is a very noxious invasive species in my country. It was so hard to enjoy seeing a butterfly pollinating it without cringing and planning how to chop it down haha.

I witnessed entire life cycle of butterflies. I have most photos except courtship and mating. I have all photos except for courtship and mating. I have all photos, right from butterfly laying eggs, stages of caterpillars, pupa and finally witnessing butterfly coming out, have spent many sleepless nights only to capture in video form.

Is fascinating how many insects just know how to fly the moment their wings are ready. but i guess we can do so if we have super strong muscles and a exoskeleton, then is just keep flapping the wings till airborne and no worries of falling.

So many questions! But mainly... Does the caterpillar have a gender before it butterflies itself? Or does it not bother with that since all it has to do is eat? Also, I wonder how caterpillars know when they're fat enough to butterfly. Is it an instinct based on weather, or is it a body weight thing that triggers it? Do they all butterfly at the same time like cicadas surfacing, or does it happen in waves of fledglings throughout a season? These videos are too short!!
