Boss DS-1 Mod: MOSFET and Tone Capacitor

In this video, I replace the tone control capacitor and install MOSFET transistors in place of the clipping diodes.

Here are the parts I used:

This video and the one where you removed d4 and d5 are both excellent. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I did this mod with similar mosfet transistors and I'm glad I did it, the DS-1 is now a monster, it was so good I'm doing this to my other DS-1s

Since the mod adds volume, you should turn up the stock pedal to compensate. Louder always sounds better, it distorts the comparison.

You can use 2n7000 mosfets instead, which are smaller and easier to fit.

I'm not so sure about the tone replacement. It seems to only dial in the midrange frequencies. What other caps could I try that would also work? I did the mod where I remove the r4 and 5 and now my ds1 is a mainstay while paired with my big muff.

Dude, thanks! Just did the take away mod with the D4 and 5. Likey. Gonna do this one soon. Thanks for sharing. This rules!!

How do think this mod compares in cost and sound compared to Keely Mod? Thank you.

Also thinking about the mosfets being to big for the board, I would mount them somewhere else in the box, off board, and join with wires, that would also make it easier to swap around if you so wanted at later date, the wires may also act as a resistor, so you might have to a compensate accordingly....

just now bought the rest of the mod parts to do it first i'll start with just the tone control mod then add the mofs later if i feel like it

So I just tried this and I am having a strange issue. After swapping the parts the pedal is waaaayyy quieter now. Like unusably quiet. Any ideas? Did I break something?

FINALLY a mod that makes it sound like an amp channel!!

I'm from Singapore, the mosfet 100 volts will work with standard 220 power source here?

I have a 1979 original run DS-1 and it sounds more like a cranked Marshall than the current DS-1's which are fizzy sounding. Compared it side by side to a friends current one and he could hear the difference straight away. If you get your hands on one you won't regret it

Can i use IRF820 with the same voltage and amperage?? IRF520 is hard find in our country

Nice one mate! I’ve just done this to mine and it sounds much much better! Thank you!

Thanks for doing this follow up video. With the competition for your time, it is easy to rationalize blowing it off. Plus some of the comments... ah, humans.

These 2 components added has polarity? How is the connection?, there is some diagram or something

Excellent, dude! What a change! It sounds great! QUESTION: Would it be possible to use a vacuum tube (a 12au7, for instance) instead of the MOSFET? That would be awesome! I believe some architectural modification would be required in order for the tube to fit. Nevertheless, in terms of circuitry, would it be possible?
