Welcome to part 3 of my module planning mini-series. In part 1 we talked about silhouettes and the types of outfits we want to create. In part 2 we translated those silhouettes into patterns. Today we are talking all about color, color stories, and fabric! As always, let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.

The idea of choosing a print you like and then building your color story for your capsule is great. I do that subconsciously sometimes, but gradually overtime after finding I have little to go with a piece. Now to be more intentional.
I had my colors done years ago. I have both yellow and blue undertones and don't fit neatly in one season. I remember the lady who did my colors being so frustrated because she couldn't fit me in a season. She kept asking if I died my hair or was wearing make up. I hadn't and wasn't. She enlisted the help of the 5 others to help choose. In the end, she selected some spring and some summer swatches for me. It was fun and interesting.

Loved this one! I need to go play with the Canva color tool! NEVER feel bad about having a stash! A few years ago, my husband and I had a period of time where he lost his job and I was not working because of an injury— all my sewing allowance was cut off, but I kept sewing because of my giant stash! It helped to keep my spirits up at a very difficult time. Someday my kids will have to deal with whatever I have left, but I LOVE shopping my stash!

This is helpful. Thank you Whitney. Advice on how much fabric to buy and how to build a colour story is really useful. I’m a summer as well, although I have ash brown greying hair. I’m also a soft classic which I found surprising, but super helpful. Thanks for the recommendation.

Hi Whitney, I adore that first crepe fabric 💕....wish we had a Joanne's here in the uk...or maybe that would be a bit fatal 😉. I love to wear dusty rose colours, blues, grey's and splashes of bright pink... I have very similar hair and skin colour to you I think. I definitely wear more solids but I always get drawn to the florals 💮🌹🌺🌸😵😁😘

I was glad to hear they don't ALL have to go together. I was pulling fabrics last night, and two of my prints MATCH beautifully colorwise, but only a crazy person would wear them together. One is a graphic zig zag pattern, and the other is an Asian print...I was going to pull the zigzag, but I'll keep it now.

It's not like I needed any more reasons to watch your channel as I already love it, but I'm also a summer, and after doing the test you linked to recently, I'm a soft classic too. So I'll be following your pattern / colour / style choices even more avidly now! But, you know, in a non-stalky way 🤣

Great advice as usual! I like to wear my colors because I really feel like they enhance my look. If I want to use colors outside of my palette, I use those as accents or bottoms so the off-color is away from my face.

I think you have a great eye for putting colors together! After you said your mom wears black I kept picturing you with a darker, cooler hair color. I just think that would make your skin glow. But it's all about what you like. Thanks for the video, you're wonderful!

Thank you Whitney, that was really interesting. I think starting with a print and working from that is an excellent idea. I do like the dress you are wearing too, and that would easily fit into many capsules.

One of my favorite ways to look at colors is with Design Seeds color palettes or any of the million others I find on Pinterest. It really helps in how I might pair RTW with my slowly growing sewn wardrobe.

It’s so helpful you’re doing this series when I just started Colette’s Wardrobe Architect. You’re really helping me think of what I love wearing and want to wear & getting me ready to plan sewing projects for my autumn wardrobe!

I am a "summer", too! I love all the fabrics that you choose!
Yes! The stash! It's the way the cookie crumbles! If you like the fabric,
better get it. It's not always available. It's that way with ready-made, too.
Happy threads! Hugs!

I had my colours done a few years ago and it was worth every penny. I am a Cool Winter. She brought up colours I had never worn but they really do work!! Love your videos, thank you for the work that you do ✂️💕

Thank you for the informative video! I just love all of the series. When I saw the first one, it just blew me away - I went to the Kibbe rabbit hole for more than week! 😄
I stopped all my sewing plans and projects until I figure out my actual style. Because I have always been for the new and shiny things (and patterns) 😃
Now I am planning 2 modules, that contain rtw pieces as long as the sew-by-me stuff.
I am a Dramatic type (which makes looking for casual style difficult) and regarding colors - dark winter with few autumn vibes.
This video is very interesting as well. Color stories are always very hard for me. I will definitely try to make a color story from a nice print I like (and in my colors) :)
Thank you Whitney!

Love the talk on fabric choices to no buy the shiny new thing. I do need to check my own stash as it is upstairs organized in tubes and closets. You easily can forget what you have which is too many fabrics. Love talking about colors for the color wheel. Will check that out below. I've had my colors done and have fabric swatches. Forgot that way to shop. I'm known to be a fall with spring tones. This was so good of talk. Your videos are so good to watch again!

Hi there, I found this really useful as I get overwhelmed by the amount of fabric and colours in shops. Four colours I can cope with!!! Thank you Jane

Thank you for this information Whitney. In my excitement about sewing, these are great things to remember to help me rein in my impulses on choosing and buying.

I am a ‘summer’ too! No wonder I love your fabric choices..I did the body test and I am Classic. Bought my swimwear fabric, Lisette pattern and lining. Can’t wait for the video. I did read through the instructions and was a bit confused on sewing the top.

Great tips. I've for a long while have been saving color swatches to a Pinterest board. Admittingly I never followed them and had forgotten about it until watching your video. I think I will revisit this when I shop my stash next time. Thanks 😉
