My Custom Global Keyboard Shortcuts - Hammerspoon

Hammerspoon allows you to create custom keyboard shortcuts or setup hotkeys that will run macros (collections of actions, or automated tasks). In this video, I show how Hammerspoon can be used as an alternative to Karabiner-Elements and Keyboard Maestro, and Hammerspoon even works on macOS Big Sur. To use Hammerspoon, you write code in Lua that uses the Hammerspoon API to communicate with your operating system macOS. It has APIs for applications, windows, mouse pointers, filesystem objects, audio devices, batteries, screens, low-level keyboard/mouse events, clipboards, location services, wifi, and more.

Thanks for this -- super useful (my karabiner broke on the big sur beta as well).

One problem I ran into trying to get this set up: you have to click the "Enable Accessibility" button on the Hammerspoon preferences screen. It doesn't prompt you for this when you install, and if you don't do it the hs.eventtap.keyStroke commands won't work.

hey i wanted to know if i can map left_ctrl + left_option to mouse button 3. I tried this using karabiner but failed and it prolly just does not lets me map a key to mouse without pressing a keyboard button

That’s funny - I’ve been wanting to customize the keyboard shortcuts in Figma - including modifying some of the built-in ones. Would that be doable with these tools?

I've been struggling to use custom actions in the extra buttons of my mouse. It's like Apple doesn't want you to have macros o the slightest customization.
So I think I'm gonna have to learn some code just to use my mouse how I like
