Also, in the movie, he gives his reason as to respecting him that it is because he related to him in the sense that they both were genius's for their ideas and actions. And I know what you're thinking: "what did Thanos do that was so smart?" And my answer to that question is that, he came up with the idea to stop world poverty and hunger by reducing the population by 50%. And he did that on multiple different planets including Gamoras original home and claimed that he was saving them. As he did on Thors mother ship that was an escape ship from asgard as it was being destroyed by surtur. So the final breakdown of this comment, is that Thanos respects Tony because he thought they were similar in the ways of being smart and underestimated for success. Hope this helped
