That's like in England when they started making table knives with round tips so you couldn't stab dinner companions. Still had an edge to slice, but no stabby stabby.

If you can't walk, you can't cut my head off.

- some shogun probably

Now, I imagine samurai trying to quickly stand up to fight only for their numb legs to wobble.

Seiza was one of the two punishment used by my jujitsu instructor when I was a teen. After 20 minute I could barely feel my feet... 😣

Then the entire discipline of iaijutsu was developed as a way to attack your enemy with the sword while sitting in seiza at a tea ceremony.

I think I first learned about this from Let's Ask Shogo's Video. But yeah, it's so true. If your legs are numb, you can't attack. Nice move, Shogun.. 😂😂😂😂😂

I forget which youtuber, but he is japanese and does a bunch of videos on japan and its history and culture. He talked about this and said exactly what you said. You sit like this too make your legs numb.

Japanese history always feels like "everything was really cool but chaos until the Edo Period"

Funny that one of the first things you learn in any japanese swordsmanship class (that ive been to) is how to draw and cut from seiza

Its weird since I’ve never really felt uncomfortable sitting that way. I suppose maybe because I grew up doing it but people always ask me how i can stand to sit like that for a long time.

I’ve done this since childhood and my legs never went numb or hurt ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I taught it was so they would be ready to draw they sword and kill but its the opposite also I thought it was so ninja couldn't easily kill them at bars

So what's funny to me is I started sitting like this at the dinner table because to me it's actually comfy. I've been doing it since I was young and had no idea about Japanese culture until much much later

I did a bunch of judo as a kid and we always had to sit down like this, I can somewhat sit comfortably like this for long periods of time

There are a number of battojutsu moves that start from Seiza. It's actually very easy to get back to your feet while drawing.
