The main aspect of xbox moving away from physical media that would bother me would be backwards compatibility, there are certain xbox 360 games that are now delisted and have been for a while but luckily I still own them on disc, having a console like the current XSX where I could play them at 4k is very good I'd be very sad to see MS move away from that

It's nice to hear ppl that are grown up and mature about what they talk about. It's more understandable listening to people just a few years younger than myself talking, instead of 20 year olds that think they've been through everything and are jumpy, rude. I mean it's gaming.

Used disc games are always cheaper than the digital download .
In Canada a used disc of Witchers 3 is $15-$20 PS store still wants $79 for that old game to download .

Horizon Forbidden West is such a fun game.

The one thing we will loose is the crazy ways we get our games for next to nothing.
I bought Thief, Dishonored definitive Edition, Black Ops 3, Ac Unity, Until Dawn and Resident Evil 2 Remake all for just $5 from a garage sale a year ago. Its going to suck to loose this stuff

The 2020s are a transition period for a lot of technology: electric and gas cars being available, and digital and physical video games. You will only see new electric cars and new digital games on consoles next decade. Enjoy it now.

2024 is going to be an interesting year because a lot of big players are making a shift away from physical media in one way or another: Sony, Microsoft, Best Buy, Target, Disney (in Australia), and Alan Wake 2 coming this month is a big "test the waters" kind of moment for digital only releases. It is sure to prove divisive but it'll still be fascinating to see how it plays out, but there will still be online stores and dedicated gaming stores around.

Both Sony and MS could create a second hand digital market and make money along the way if they are so hell bent on digital or... These platforms need to open up to other stores to drive competition. Prices are crazy, especially when you consider the reduced distribution costs.

Someone needs to come up a successor to Blu-Ray that allows games to be played *from the disc* instead of requiring an installation and almost always a day one patch. IMO it's the only way physical media is likely to survive.

You can’t even boot up a ps1/2/3 disk in the current PlayStation. Why should we expect to be able to do that in the future? I swear y’all ramble about some nonsense sometimes.

I will be buying this, can’t let physical media die

One point I'd take issue with: I would not describe the Burning Shores expansion as 'meaty.' I was horrified to complete it in just two evenings, as compared to the Frozen Wilds expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn which added an extra week to my play time.

Mind you, I also wouldn't describe Horizon Forbidden West itself as 'good.' So there's that, I suppose.

I skipped Horizon Forbidden West, because it launched with a lot of issues (Mostly referring to the iq issues) which required patches to fix. I was speculating that a complete edition might come out at some point and now my patience has been rewarded. I'm under no illusion that the lack of complete editions are a dealbreaker for many people, but I'll keep voting with my wallet and hope that enough people do for publishers to at least see some value in the release of these type of complete builds on disc.
One thing I'd like to add to the last point about buying on PC if digital is the only option: There are ways to buy many games on PC digitally without DRM so digital is not automatically an ownership issue on PC. GoG has a lot of DRM free games for example. If we're being realistic, it's only a matter of time before physical media is going the way of the dodo so the future of ownership will depend on DRM free digital solutions unfortunately.

Digital distribution is a problem only on closed platforms like consoles. And I'm not surprised if sooner or later the European Union sues all three console manufacturers for monopoly on digital distribution.

I've always bought physical games but never from a high street store. Always from online retailers so i don't see that they are harder to get these days.

the only reason I got the digital series s is because it was so much cheaper than everything else, but if $500 gets you either a ps5 with a disc drive or a series x without a disc drive, thats not a good look imo.

It's so weird, everytime these physical vs digital media discussions come up, never is it mentioned that you can buy a £70 physical game and then SELL it and use that money to buy more games.

The amount of times I buy a Sony title day one, rinse it in a week, and sell it for the same price 1, or 2 weeks later, losing out only on ebay fees.

Maybe because all of these outlets get the games sent to them, so it's no skin off their back..?

Sony stole this from SE. They saw the internet lose their shit over the fact that ffvii rebirth was going to be two discs. And sony were like we cant have that. Thus stolen.
