As someone who lived with a parent like this, this is painfully accurate

I genuinely worry that Sam had a really toxic mother growing up because these are scarily accurate.

Every time someone tells me “well when I was your age I did this” I just respond “ok well you’re you, and I’m me and we’re different.” They usually can’t think of anything to say if they were looking for an argument, anyone else who hears it laughs it off and the topic changes though.

"You know what makes me depressed, paying bills, you should be lucky you don't have to do that."

Parents stop minimizing their kids' feelings and thinking that bills are the only things that can cause depression challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

1:10 “You made a lot of food, can I not eat it?!”
“Honey we talked about this sometimes ya just gotta have self control.”
*HOW IS THAT RELEVANT TO MY QUESTION?*

The part where your parents make fun of you in front of other hits home.
Whenever I'm in public with my parents and they're hanging out with their friends or are at church I'm always standing there awkwardly because I don't even know these people and my dad is always like, "She talks so much huh?" to the people and then they start laughing and I'm just standing there trying to not start crying

This sounds exactly like my mom, only difference is my mom was more physically abusive then verbally and she wonders why I don't want to have a relationship with her

I love the one where the mom is like "NO ONE EVER HELPS ME IN THIS HOUSE“
And then someone tries to help, and she’s like "no, no I’ve got this. Go away.“ the amount of times I have seen a mom do this to my friends is horrifying. Not sure if the mom is overwhelmed and doesn’t want anyone to touch anything, but the amount of fear/stress I get from this kind of behavior just 📈📈📈

Slight TW for mentions of body shaming:
My mom's bf had at least two family members who would constantly pick apart my appearance. I was like 13-14 and their ages ranged from like 50-70. Looking back I can tell those hags were pathetic and heartless. But it really messed with my self esteem growing up. As I was already dealing with body issues. If they thought I ate too much or not enough they'd let me know. They'd ask me when I was getting summer ready. They'd tell me my make up was too dark and made me look scary (something I take as a compliment now) they'd tell me wearing all black made me "look depressed" (spoiler alert)
One day, while I was 17 I had decided after months of contemplation to give myself a side shave. It was and still is one of my favorite hair cuts I've ever had. But they didn't enjoy it and decided to make my business their problem.
Hag 1: "Why'd you cut your hair like that?"
Me: "Oh, I just thought it would look cool. I wanted to try something different."
Hag 1: "My niece cut her hair like that. I don't understand why all these teen girls are shaving their heads." (With the biggest stink eye you can imagine)
Me: "Probably cuz it looks cool and doesn't require the approval of others."
Silence, besides my brother's stifled chuckle.
Hag 2: *clutches pearls* "She was just asking you a question. No need to be rude."
They haven't fucked with me since. If they do, I'll be ready.
Bullies, especially adults who bully children are pathetic. I hope whatever insecurities they gave you heals over time, or at least becomes less painful, person on the other side of the technological void.

I remember when I got my first tattoo, I hid it for 6 months throughout winter and into summer. I didn't want to wear my ankle brace that I was using to cover it, so I told my mom while she was gardening outside. I just told her, and she put her head in her hands and sounded like she'd start crying, asking why I'd do it. Then she asked to see it, and I SWEAR.

Literally went like this;

Mom: "At least let me see it."
Me: "It's classy, it's fine."
Mom: "It's a tattoo, that's not classy."
Me: *Turn around and shows her tat on my ankle.
Mom: Pause. Head tilt. "That looks really nice."

My mom is a traditional conservative christian.
I'm supposedly going to hell for a tattoo that "looks really nice".
It's a treble clef with a rose growing out of the G.
