It shocks us how many 4WD’s we see these days that are GROSSLY overweight & towing vans they SHOULDN’T be. ⚖️

It seems to be a growing epidemic in Australia right now so we’re going to show you how ⚠️DANGEROUS⚠️ it is to be extremely overloaded & above your GVM.

We’re taking two 2024 Ford Rangers & loading them up to show you how getting something as SIMPLE as a GVM upgrade can change the way you drive & tow. 🙌

In this episode:
0:58 Know your weights
2:08 Are you over GVM?
5:24 Towing and GCM
8:44 GVM upgrades
10:20 Why is going over GVM bad?
11:02 Offroad
15:01 Test track
17:51 Brake test

Awesome message to preach, the amount of people I see driving around with their FAMILIES in a vehicle that is grossly over GCM and GVM is just ridiculous people need more education on this.

Being overweight and overloaded was such a big kerffufle in my industry. We're moving away from Dual Cabs to light trucks for this very reason. We've done the GVM upgrade but honestly it's a bandaid to the solution.

You didn’t make any mention of maximum weights over the axles. Not only can you not exceed the GVM, but you can not exceed maximum weights over each axle. Your test put all the weight in the tray. I dare say, you would have exceeded the rear axle weights and therefore, were illegal.

Years ago i dropped a upgraded and lifted suspension in my Colorado, I didn't even know what gvm was at the time, but i was blown away by the capability difference. Cornering, carrying and control, in short, the upgraded suspension was chalk and cheese in comparison to the stock.

Great video. The amount of vehicles I see clearly overloaded (particularly towing large vans) is insane.

Imagine dropping $60, 000+ on a ute and the suspensions still no good.

Ive done the upgrade to my dmax with a 2" lift 35's and a bit of trimming to the arches and the thing is unstoppable. I do put 33 all terrain tyres back on when im on road or just going round town as it tows better on the smaller wheels but its definitely worth the money to upgrade.

6:40 this should be a Ford problem. They quote 350 kg ball and 3500 tow. Yet the thing is on the stops and would be scary to drive

We did lots of this when buying horse trailers and quickly realised 80% of them are illegal as the smaller trailers were over their GVM. Once you put 3-4 horses on and gear the suspension was over weight. This was from factory on the trailer made to carry horses.

Awesome vid, there’s so many utes and wagons that are just sitting on the bump stops, smashing the chassis even some with inverted leafs, and some that are that overloaded that they’re down right dangerous and scary to drive.

Thanks Graham, I found this one at exectly the right time, was looking at GVM ect as pick up new van in 2 weeks. I am off to Pedders this morning, I have leaerned as lot. My current MUX with accressories can't legally tow the 3T Van as it stands.

In NZ, for licensing purposes, the GCM is defined as a combo of the manufacturer spec for the max vehicle GVM + Max trailer GVM. Not the combination of actual weights. I wonder if the GCM definition in any Aussie states is based on max manufacturer specs rather than actual weights?

How about testing something that can do the job straight out of the box?

One vehicle had discs all round, the other had drums at the back. That would make a big difference to the braking that you didnt allow for.

For the price of vehicles now they should already have a gvm upgrade. If they didn’t need to put in idiot driver tech like lane change, brake assist ect. Maybe they would. It’s pretty cheap manufactures don’t put actual suspension under their vehicles!

The problem is all these little dual cab ute owners being lied to about their capabilities by dealers.

This week I saw a double cab Ute fitted with an 2.4m tray that hung 1m behind the chassis. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the tow bar tongue was also 1m long!
