In this video, Brigid Laffan from the Robert Schuman Centre of the European University Institute explains how Brexit is a perfect case study in two critical aspects of differentiated European integration: external and internal differentiation. In this video, we explore the Barnier Escalier system of negotiation, and how the intersection of British and European red lines with this Escalier resulted in a 'no deal' outcome.

Brigid Laffan is the DiCE Project Coordinator and a leading expert on differentiated European integration.

This series from DiCE – Differentiation: Clustering Excellence, “DiCE Webinars” takes the full knowledge of Europe’s leading experts on differentiated integration, and presents it in an easy to digest video format.

Great summarization of the brexit process. I think most of the problems in post brexit Britain exist because the current government doesn't own the agreements it negotiated and concluded with the EU. That means they fought for their red lines and protected them, but are not willing to bear the consequences and obligations that result from it and thus refuse to implement the agreed measures. It seems they think they could still opt out from inconvenient regulations agreed with the EU. But this behaviour is very much under observation by other countries and organizations and produce at least a wait-and-see attitude in these countries to sort out their trading relationship with the UK. All in all the UK appears to wilfully continue to harm itself. Of course they can, they're sovereign to do this.
