In this lesson I share I share how to use gravity to your advantage when chipping. After repeating the basics of chipping discussed in an earlier video, I demonstrate how letting the club head fall under its own weight, whilst utilising a long backswing and a short follow-through, promotes effective chipping.

It’s great that a player of Padraigs stature can take the time to share his knowledge like this, love his tips and videos surely more pros should follow his lead 👌

I am constantly amazed at the quality of his teaching, it is by far the most relatable and cut to the chase of any lessons I can find on youtube. This is money.

Absolutely fantastic. My chipping has got worse lately and I have just now realised that it was for the reason you said Paddy. I have been shortening the backswing and trying to force speed through the ball causing me to knife chips through the green.

Chipping and short game anxiety is a tough thing to get over. It seems counterintuitive to go longer with the backswing.. but of course you are right . I love the shortened follow through with the club pointing parallel left at target.

I've been struggling with chipping for years after having been very competent in my youth. The longer backswing and gravity concepts might have just saved me Paddy. Thanks!!!

The advice to use gravity is golden and something few instructors mention. 👍

Gravity is the most consistent force on the planet, accelerating mass towards the ground at 32ft/sec/sec. and acts not just on the club head but also the arms which have far more mass than the club head. Using the hip and shoulder turn to accelerate the arms and club head and then just letting the uncoiling of the legs and core plus gravity do all the work on the way down produces very consistent distance control.

One of the first golf books I purchased in the 1980s was Tom Watson’s “Getting Up and Down From 40 Yards and In” in which he suggested two drills. In the first you hit every wedge and iron in the bag with 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 just observing and making notes on carry, roll and height. In the second use the data gathered in the first to hit close to flags 10 - 40 yards away with all the clubs. Do those drills with the technique suggested by Padraig and you’ll see more options around greens and shoot lower scores.
