You have to realise, stein's fish and chips in padstow is just pretentious bollocks for london folk in their range rovers going to Padstow. We ate in and were also underwhelmed. A good indepedent chippie is ALWAYS the way to go....its just about ££££ for Stein

I ' visited' Lands' End briefly a few years ago with the family.
Thought it was outrageous to have to pay to visit somewhere before I'd even got to park! ..turned around Immediately and left...I used to love Padstow as a child, we went there every summer.
Like all these charming little coastal towns, they get ruined by mass tourism and capitalists who rip everyone off..as you rightly said, shameful.

Rick Stein relies on tourists going to his fish and chip shop (once) just so they can tell their mates when they get home that "we went to Rick Stein's place" in other words a tourist trap and a very expensive one at that.If I were Rick Stein I would be very very embarrassed watching this, I guess the £££ rolling in matter more!!

I worked at Rick Steins for 4 years in Newquay, I did 2 shifts in Padstow, the were constantly under staffed, the turnover of staff was rediculas. Both the times I went there i hated it, the second time I did it 9am until 11 pm with a 45min break.the staff get treated like crap and genuinely don't care.

I'm a trained chef and have worked an quite a few 5 star resorts here in the USA. May be I should not say this, but most of these celebrity chef restaurants are cook out of a bag. Meaning that things like the mix for the fish is pre made and comes out of a bag. Same with all the sauces probably the mushy peas as well. They are just made to the chef recipe. They do this for consistency.
I 100% agree with you. Always go to the mom and pops restaurants. They are less likely to use out of the bag food stuff as the pre made can be quite costly. I never go to any of these types of restaurants or even chain as they cook from bags as well. I have even worked at some 5 start resorts that had classically trained chefs like myself cooking out of bags. Hell I worked at one where we used Stouffer's frozen Lasagna's for wedding buffets @ $50 usd per plate. So yeah don't fall for the big fancy names. You rarely get you moneys worth. And no I do not cook anymore the industry is a mess right now.

Imagine if every emergency service vehicle was electric? And you dialled 999 and were told sorry “we can’t attend” vehicles on charge.

Great video Lee. It just goes to show that people will still buy substandard food, just because of a celebrity name. No excuse to rip people off

That can’t be legal, you can’t take your own photographs! 😡
£4 for a coffee what a disgrace

As soon as you opened the box, that looked like it’d been kicked to the kerb a few times!
Awful!! Rick should be ashamed of himself if that’s what his chains serve up!!
Totally agree with you! Expensive seagull fodder! 🙄
So much better from small independent establishments out there.

Me and my wife have really enjoyed this mini-series, watching each instalment. Very insightful, real-world experiences of an EV. Totally agree with your conclusions. We’ve all been taken for a ride (excuse the pun). One issue not addressed is the lack of generating capacity in the UK, which only has around 5% spare at peak times. How will we generate enough electricity to charge millions of addition cars, even if we had the infrastructure. Onwards…

I’ve always enjoyed Steins fish and chips. But I’ll agree with your criticism. It is very expensive and the service is not exactly friendly, I’ve found.

You should’ve taken a short walk into Padstow itself and eaten it by the docks. That’s what we always do after we’ve done the camel trail bike ride.

I can’t believe the sachets of vinegar. That’s a deal breaker for me. It’s part of the fish and chips ritual to have salt and vinegar shaken on just before it’s wrapped up in paper. No more Steins for me if that’s what they’re now doing. Appalling.

Another entertaining vlog Lee, great stuff.

Hey Lee, glad you mentioned about how quiet EV cars are. As a blind person they are a nightmare to me, always worrying when I cross a busy road have I definitely not overlooked one of them in my vicinity. Those Fish and chips sounded the pits from your description. All the best

Around Easter 1974 I made a trip from Dover all along the English south coast with my parents.
The drabness of it all still haunts me. We once made a stop at something called "Little Chef", an
absolute horrific experience.
What a joy it was when we finally got back on to the European continent.
Seems that not an awful lot has changed after all those years, except for having to consume a
Rick Stein cuisine in the vicinity of some Russian gulag building in the middle of a parking area.

It's the vinegar in a sachet and salt in a packet that gets to me.
Rick - sort it out.

Hours to charge a car . Fill up with petrol 2to 3 mins. I'll stick with petrol.

Looked at Steins a few years ago - exorbitant prices and I won’t be ripped off, so we gave it a miss. Glad we did because we got some great fish and chips a lot cheaper elsewhere. Guess the weed was parsley, but it cudda been a stinging nettle lol. F & C musta been crap if you’re complaining of “greasy” that soon. You don’t usually feel like it’s greasy until you have finished and feel you don’t want fish and chips for a week or two.

Went to Padstein some years ago and had a look at Rick's place. The prices were astronomical. If you wanted to mug yourself even more, there was a display of purchasable souvenirs, cooking equipment and what I can only describe as bric-a-brac for equally outrageous prices. We got delicious fish and chips from a modest chip shop a stone's throw away for about a quarter of the cost. It was a shame, because I was a bit of a foodie in those days and had always liked Rick Stein's TV shows.

Live in Cornwall, got fish and chips once at Steins in Falmouth...never, ever again, it was the most over priced and fish less (all batter) meal myself and 2 friends ever had. What's more folks were queing for 45 minutes for a table. Hysterical! So back to Harbour lights or Sanders or Cousin Jack's, less cost, less grease and much nicer. Love Cornwall

Fond memories of Cornwall, greedy car parks, parking tickets outside hotel when taking luggage in. Lands end rip off and nothing much to encourage you to go again. Miserable pub landlords, resented you being there. Only good thing was the pasties. Absolutely nowhere to go without putting hand in pocket.
