I don't think James feels guilty, if he did, he wouldn't have done this to his family again. He couldn't even give them the customary two-week notice and his excuse that he was worried they'd fire him, doesn't make sense. They'd probably need him to train a new employee, and they hired him back the first time, so I highly doubt they'd fire him out of spite. James is the source of almost all of his problems, he avoids conflict at every turn. I think he told Tata's friend that he didn't want kids so the friend would tell Tata and he wouldn't have to.
