GMs have scary memory.
Me: what did i have for lunch yesterday again?
Caruana: yeah Ding and Alireza played this position in a random blitz game one time.
Ding: oh yes, i last played this position against Alireza in 2019.
Wth. 😂

Fabi could play the win if he feels its winning for him. There is no rule in chess that says Black must always play for a draw!

Ding cannot loose regardless of the circumstances he IS the World Champion, if he doesn't show up he will loose credibility and chess fans will not respect him. Even if he doesn't win the tournament a plus score will be good.

Fabi saying a very good description of Ding: he literally has no idea. Not a real world champion

This game is another perfect example of the 3 fold repetition draw flaws. Look at Whites position. Lack of development, and the piece coordination is awful, a Queen defending a Knight making the Queen a long range Pawn. And yet draw. This game was not equal because both sides played masterfully, this game was equal because we have misapplied a rule of draw onto a repetition. If the repeating player were brought to forfiet? Here that would make complete sense. The theory of rapid development, theory of piece activity, both ignored seeking a method of not continuing the game. Why play move 1? Ding played into an absolutely terrible position, which is only saved by the unwillingness to play chess. Play awful chess then repeat and draw. "Draw" means we have take a position down to its furthest extent, we have "drawn" every possibility out of this game and there is now no material left to accomplish mate, the game has "drawn." When we rule of 3 fold draw came into being 1880-1915, it was misapplied. It's clear now the rule ought to be forfiet. Repeating players loses. As examples here, Ding moves and he loses because his position is inferior because he ignored development, because he could take a repetition. Because we haven't had the good reasoning to make a competitive change to the rules!
