In Amazing Spider-Man 289, Jason Macendale (Jack O'Lantern) hired the Foreigner to kill Ned Leeds who was a brainwashed puppet /stand-in for the original Hobgoblin, Roderick Kingsley. Wanting to retire and Ned becoming more unstable as a result of the brainwashing, Kingsley leaked Ned's identity to the criminal underworld. Macendale would eventually assume the mantle of the Hobgoblin.
