Spleen is an organ that is seen on the left side upper quadrant, means just beneath the left side of the chest. Splenomegaly indicates the spleen is enlarged there are so many reasons why the spleen is enlarged one is when people who have a blood problem. Blood usually circulates for 3 months. Blood cells we all know are the red cells, white cells and platelets. If red cells are abnormally elongated, spherical, then these cells get destroyed in the spleen, repeatedly the cells gets destroyed in the spleen and the cells become enlarged, this is one reason. Second reason is spleen will get enlarged whenever there is liver vein when it gets blocked or portal hypertension, that is the blood supply will go more to the spleen and the spleen will get enlarged. Number three is in case of malaria, typhoid, these infection’s the spleen will get enlarged and number 4 is spleen will get enlarged in some tumours that is known as a lymphoma tumour or lymph gland tumours, then also the spleen will get enlarged. These are the 3 common reasons for spleen enlargement. Once the spleen in enlarged, the spleen will sit on our stomach, then the stomach will not get enlarged because when we eat the stomach should fill, then people will get early satiety, means they become immediately full and they can have a dull aching pain on the left side of the chest, beneath the chest on the upper abdomen, that is the second problem what they have, third issue is when the spleen is too much enlarged, they can have nausea or vomiting sensation. This are the three problems when they have a splenic enlargement. Next problem is when they have low platelet count. This happens when the spleen is enlarged because of liver problems. That is because of portal hypertension.
