honestly, this was a blessing in disguise since it allowed more companies to give games a shot (xbox was literally an example of this) and overall allowed more variety in the gaming market because hey, all competition is good competition after all.

And that is the beginning of how SEGA and Nintendo joined forces.

I find it funny how it was Nintendo who slighted and angered Sony, yet it would be Sega who would ultimately be the victim of direct competition with the Playstation

So what we got at the end:
-Sony's Playstation and really memorable games.
-Nintendo and really memorable memes and YTPs about games for the Philips CDI based about their IPs.

in an alternate world : Sony and Nintendo stay together, creating the wildly successful Nintendo Play-Station Console. Being the new generation, the console sells like hotcakes. With less alternatives than what there should have been, the Sega Saturn does better than it did in our timeline, however is a far second to the Nintendo Play-Station. With the success of the Play-Station, the pair continues their partnership with complete domination of the market in mind. In the lifetime of the Play-Station, Sony would push for more adult games for the Play-Station, however would have push back by Nintendo. On one hand, there was a whole demographic to appeal to : Teenagers, and adults. On the other hand, they could face yet another panic over the maturity of video games. They come to a compromise, with the Play-Station having some leeway for more violence, but nothing overtly risque was allowed.

This had two effects. While yes, they had drawn in more people, parents and guardians would have a line blurred between the two companies. There was no exact "Clean, Friendly" console, and a more "Gritty, Mature" console. Now, it was just Sega and Nintendo-Sony. This aids Sega for the younger demographic, although them losing appeal to the ones which they formerly catered to was troubling. Nonetheless, Sega pushed through to the sixth generation. They released the Sega Dreamcast, and at first, it was a success. There was nothing else to pit against it for some time, allowing it to do well momentarily. This was until the duo came to turn the state of the Dreamcast into a nightmare. All the Intellectual Properties developed by both Nintendo, and Sony (Of course, beginning to differ from that of our timelines) blew any chance of Sega winning that generation up.

The Nintendo-Sony Play-Station 2 had everything. The games market was dominated, and it had all the capabilities of various other media players. Music, Movies, it even had a niche as a personal computer for some. But, as with the fifth generation, the lack of any true competition would be their saving grace. The Sega Dreamcast, compared to this timeline, was far more successful, but also compared to this timeline was crushed far more. The Dreamcast miraculously just barely edged out as a profit rather than a loss.

Microsoft took interest in the growing games market. It was no longer just a toy, but an experience. All sorts of experiences for all ages, and Microsoft saw value in what was compared to now, untapped. Microsoft in the sixth generation did not release any console, they feared they would be a company who birthed a forgotten joke of a console. Thrown in with the ranks of the Apple-Bandai Pippin, the TurboGrafx, the 3DO. Observing Sega's trend of survival, although nothing compared to the games behemoth that was Nintendo-Sony, they felt confident that they would make some sort of gain, even the smallest, by partnering with Sega.

On it's last legs, Sega Of America would accept the offer proposed to them by Microsoft. Sega Of America found it to be the last hope for Sega. This was one of the United States largest technology companies, ones who specialized in computers, coming to Sega for help. In any other scenario, Sega Of Japan would refuse this, but swallowing their pride, they would heed the word of S.O.A. Joining forces, Sega-Microsoft would begin development on a new console- the Sega Apollo. This console would, as the name suggests, be a giant leap for the company. Though there was minor online aspects to the sixth generation, the Apollo. The Seventh Generation would see the dawn of the online age, and a step-up for graphics.

Side Notes : If anyone actually sees this, or cares for it, and even likes it, tell me and maybe I'll keep it going. I've had ideas about arcades and the handheld race.

Thank you! Finally somebody has mentioned that it wasn't all because of Nintendo that Sony started the PlayStation. In fact thanks to an article I read on IGN way back in like 2010 I think, maybe earlier I had already known that Sony did approach Sega to work together on a console and it didn't pan out. Also according to the article Sega apparently was also approached by Microsoft and Microsoft was rejected and ultimately made the Xbox although nobody talks about that so I don't know if the one with Microsoft is true.

SEGA is still alive and still kicking with great franchises like total war, compagny of heroes, yakuza, Two point, etc.

Imagine if an alternate scenario where Sony and Nintendo went through with their deal and somewhere down the line, they get Sega involved too. Now imagine Nintendo and Sega being bought by Sony, thus ending Nintendo and Sega’s bitter rivalry for good and Sony goes on to hold a monopoly on the console gaming market. Then imagine somewhere down the line, Microsoft decides to fight back against Sony’s monopoly by introducing the Xbox. I don’t think anyone would come out of this scenario unscathed.

the reason why SEGA of Japan declined the partnership, was because they thought Sony didn't have any experience with games, they couldn't make any good.

Despite the N64 having great multiplayer games and other iconic games such as Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, the Playstation CRUSHED the competition.

If Nintendo and Sony stayed together it would be very very bad for the gaming industry.
