Only point is the 'taking out from someone else's" account: it does not happen. Reason why until recently only hedge funds and their VIPs had access to it is the flexibility to create those transactions with post fact executions only.
Short sales are orders, not actual transactions. They become transaction after whatever parameter is given. Last year, reatail investors started to have "some" access to short selling through shared economy tools like Robinhood, never to naked positions though.
To better explain the above, with the infamous GME case, Game Stop had a total of 78 million shares in any situation. In parallel, there were 79.1 million stocks in standing stocks inshort sales positions.
It is always a bet, however these large financial behemoths consider only they will play. Savvy folks got together is a machiavelic plan to beat them with their own rules, and not fighting with each other like they want us to.

Can I add this to my nitric acid when I'm dissolving my sterling scrap or should I just dump it into my waste bucket and cut my losses while I'm ahead.

Nice explanation, I would add that the action of the short seller having to buy stock at an elevated price pushes the stock even higher causing prices to increase at an even faster rate

man I'm just trying to imagine calling a broker every trade back in the day, nowadays we can long and short on so many platforms with stocks and crypto. great explanation though on shorts and longs!
