if you're having issues then check the pdf page isn't rotated or too small or handwritten.

A workaround a rotated pdf is to open in acrobat, save as to a tiff then ocr that as a new pdf.

to check if it is rotated open the pdf file in notepad and search for /Rotate
you shouldn't find anything, if it finds /Rotate 90, 180, 270 then it's rotated, the best way to fix this is to print to another pdf with the right view rotation set or convert to tiff then back to pdf.
