I often get asked to speak louder by friends, neighbors, and coworkers. I wonder if hearing loss from years of listening to loud music might be an underreported issue in the States.

"Went to America and ate food there" cracked me up. I wonder how many people visit and manage to eat ZERO food 😂

I think a of Japanese people think all Americans have lighter skin, blonde/light brown hair and light eyes. As a brown girl, many people were surprised when I said I was from the states.

Speaking as a born U.S. Citizen:
1. Most Americans that the Japanese actually come across are likely to be outgoing/friendly mainly because the ones that travel to Japan tend to want to encounter people of another culture. That's a big part of why they travel in the first place.
2. Oh, how I wish it were true. I believe the statistic is that 1/3 of all Americans are overweight or obese. Sad times. But since Hollywood is the only way that many/most Japanese will encounter Americans, I'm not surprised they think this.
3. Absolutely. Unequivocally. Especially food. Burgers from most fast food places use 1/4 lb (~125g) patties and there can be up to THREE of those suckers on one burger. I usually don't eat an entire pizza by myself, but I've come close. We're pretty damn spoiled over here.
4. In fairness, pizza, burgers, and cola are the most ubiquitous forms of food available (I have at least 5 burger joints and 3 pizza places within about a 10-minute drive of my apartment) and can even be purchased frozen in just about any grocery store. It's also worth pointing out that there aren't many dishes that are considered truly American and even fewer that have a broad international market appeal. Of course, you can also argue that pizza isn't really American but I digress.
5. Even as an American I think this is more true than not, but ESPECIALLY compared to Japanese. It's not just that Americans are loud it's that the Japanese are so... damn... quiet. Even if an American talking in a normal voice in Japan, because the Japanese are so frequently silent (out of courtesy of course) it makes the American that much easier to hear. So I'm not exactly surprised here.

Lol I'm an ALT (from California) teaching for my first year in Tochigi. I find myself having to match my home teachers' energies because I'm super reserved compared to what they want 😅😂

I'm going to post this again, and hopefully it won't wind up mysteriously missing (as my earlier post did):

While the topic of this video was well-intended and non-hostile enough, there are those who have chosen to utilize the comments to tee off against America/western civ. Much like the people injuring their fellow citizens and destroying both public and private property, they don't require a reason- just an excuse. While many inaccurate stereotypes persist regarding Japanese people and culture, care should be given to being thoughtful and articulate enough to carry on a civil conversation in order to clear up misunderstandings and assumptions...and perhaps even solidify personal relationships. My argument here is that the same sort of attention be given when considering us here in the U.S. As with any other country, you may not know what you think you do.

But some people just want to watch the world burn. I don't know what to say to them, except that I'm sorry you feel that way. The feeling is not mutual, and I wish you could understand that.

Here in the US, people from the city can be loud like that.
