Consider an insulated tube filled with hot water. The tube is insulated everywhere except at the end points where heat loss occurs. In this lecture, the method of separation of variables is applied to the partial differential equation which models the diffusion of heat. The decoupling of the partial differential equation leads to infinitely many ordinary differential equations. Imposing the initial heat profile is resolved via Fourier series. The lecture ends with two proposals for projects.
