Thank you for this great explanation. My 5th Great Grandparents, and their daughter, my 4th G.Grandma were on that ship heading back home to Sicily. Because of this affair they ended up staying in Washington DC and hence I am alive today. They had a baby in the midst of the canon fire. It always sounded like a romanticized story passed down the lineage but there are actual articles about it from the papers!! The captain helped name her too, saying she was "fortunate". Her name is Fortunata!!!
