In this short from Misquoting Jesus with Bart Ehrman, Bart explores the Gospel of John and its various editions. Join Bart as he uncovers the intriguing debate surrounding the first 18 verses of this gospel, which exhibit a distinct writing style and theology different from the rest. Could these verses, along with the entire last chapter, have been added as a second edition? Our historical scholars suspect so, and he'll explain their compelling arguments.

I shared similar video with an evangelical friend, her reaction was, isn’t it wonderful how the word of God remained unchanged . Not sure what I expected but the closed mindedness was enough for me to leave the church

I've followed this guy's lectures, debates and books since 1993. To me he is and will always be a legend. Fascinating listening, viewing and reading. One of my most favourite public figures in my life. You wanna talk about blessings? I feel blessed and lucky that our lifetimes crossed. Utterly brilliant man.

Even back when i read the gospel of John as a clueless normal person, with no knowledge of the scholarship, it was pretty obvious that the gospel ends at the end of chapter 20, and that 21 has been tacked on later.

It was a surprise to me to find out later that this was even controversial.

Even with John as it is, it struck me when I read the story of Jesus in the Gospels, "For the central text of the religion celebrating the man who died and then rose from the dead, there isn't a whole lot about Jesus being alive again after he was crucified."

I'm so glad we can get an actual handle on the history of Biblical construction.

Wouldn't it be something if we had the actual originals? It would be amazing to see what all has been changed added and subtracted over the years

As much as Christians drag the Qur'an and can't wait to hear something negative about the Qur'an.

When Bart speaks about the NT they see how it feels and they lose their minds. They call Bart a liar.

What I like about Bart is that he isn't a liar he simply just tells us his findings from his studies.

Even if I don't agreee with everything he says I like the fact that he isn't try to lie to everyone like Christian apologists do.

Christian apologists just wants everyone to turn off their brain and not use logic.

Sorry, Bart, but I'm not seeing the issue here. I have many times gone back to revisit my writings, and have added relevant thoughts to it. And, as John lived to a ripe old age, and dictating his memories to his assistant who was recording them in this gospel, memories of Jesus visiting with the apostles after his resurrection seems perfectly normal.
Oh, I keep forgetting, you almost desperately would love to prove the resurrection never happened. An inconvenient truth perhaps?

I'm curious what is the difference in theology.

His opinion is just that, his conjecture, and not of other many scholar who would disagree.
John, unlike the rest of the disciples, was not a fisherman.
He most likely had education.

I've looked for comments on this topic. This is the first I've seen. I suspected it was added on when I read it. It sounds inspired. Now to separate the Son of David from his Father in the passage .

I appreciate Dr. Ehrman's scholarship and enjoy watching him setting the record straight. But the bottom line for me is: who cares what the Bible says - especially in an age where humanity is more informed about such writings?

If one takes theology laid out in Gospels of John, other Gospels come pretty close to Abrahamic religion.

If you dont believe the kjv is God preserved word in English, you dont have a leg to stand on. If you think its altered or changed, you basically are saying there is no God. Because a God big enough to create the universe is big enough to preserve his word!

Praise THE LORD for RAISING UP a champion in the figure of James Warner Wallace, a "Cold Case Detective" who became a Christian after inspecting The Bible using a Cold Case mindset and after having made up his mind about the authenticity of The Gospels he became a fervent spokesman for the Truth of The Bible.

The intentional ambiguous nature of the Nicene council is reason for John chapt. 8 : 44.

Bart tends forget one important aspect of these so called contractions / later additions or alleged interpolations. Which is none of these had zero impact on development of early Christian theology.

but just as it is written [in Scripture], “THINGS WHICH THE EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND THE EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND WHICH HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM !!

Christians also believe in the involvement of the Holy spirit in the Gospels. If you don't believe in supernatural then it is entirely man made, you are just trying to prove something you already presume to be true.
