Can you show how to transpose a melody

I transpose from clef treble to tablature in an effort to learn the fretboard. Im confused when I see a clef note of D, Do I write 5th string 5th fret or 3rd string 7th fret to ensure notes are in correct octave? Im 61, and I wonder am I over complicating my issue. I appreciate any help.
