Swimbait Review: KGB Legend Reborn
The Legend Reborn is the new version of thr Legend from KGB, featuring a smooth resin finish, updated gill carving, and a refined joint that gives it a smoother, more natural swim. The 2 pc glide also features a bristle tail, and comes in at 9" and 3.75 oz. I was fishing a blank, but Kevin also lays some nice patterns, or you can send off to your painter of choice! The glide is an xss, but will possibly go more towards ss with paint/clear on it.
The Legend Reborn has a fluid "slalom" style swim on a straight retrieve, with a back and forth head knock as the bait turns. This bait is more of the "smooth swim" variety, and covers water in a natural and unobtrusive way. You can certainly cover plenty of water, and the swim won't wear you out either.
The bait will also burn if that is more your speed, and continues its smooth side to side slalom. The swim gets a little more of a thump to it, and you can feel the head turning side to side back to the rod. One note, I found that if I tried to burn it from a start where the bait was facing 90 degrees from me, it would take a moment to right itself, but if you ease into the burn it handles it nicely. This is also a testament to the stability, as the bait finds its ballast quickly.
Next we go into the slow wide glide, and the distance ability is quite impressive. The bait will move side to side 3 foot or so with relative ease, giving it slow and easy reel bumps. The slower and easier you hit the bait, the further she glides. You will find that if you hit it too hard, the bait will turn on the end and kill your distance, but this is very easy to get a feel of. The bait also turns hard on the corners, keeping it gliding side to side rather than coming towards the angler. The bait is also very stable with minimal body roll.
The Legend Reborn continues its versatility by accepting harder choppy Input to get the bait to have a narrow and sharp back and forth action. It kind of stays within itself, almost turning in place. You can achieve this with reel chops, but I found that I could keep the bait even tighter if using downward rod twitches. Again, the bait is very stable and has limited body roll on the corners.
Combining the burn and harder chops or twitches gives you an erratic and "fleeing" style retrieve, and you can really get on it. The bait accepts input from the angler well, and is very predictable in its action. The bait transitions nicely from the burn to a twitch, and if timed right you can get it to shoot out nice and wide as well.
I was throwing the Legend Reborn on a Leviathan XH, Tranx 400, and 20 lb copoly. I would definitely suggest using a line with stretch, as braid may overwork the bait on the twitches, especially if you're looking for a wide and slow presentation. The rod/reel combo is probably a hair on the overkill side, but that is my preference. A rod with a softer more moderate action will also aid in the slow presentation.
I hope you've enjoyed today's video! See you next Sunday for another one!
