🔰Bait Review: Crappie Edition🔰

I have recieved a handful of requests to shoot a swim vid of the KGB Crappie over the last few weeks, and I was able to finally borrow one to play with. I hope this quick video and review will address some of your questions.

The Crappie I borrowed is the slow sink version, and comprises of a 2 PC thin resin body and brush tail. The joint itself has a nice squeal (think old, just getting good buzzbait), and the overall profile is very natural. The bait also casts well, even though it has those broad wide flanks.

The bait comes to life with a very natural straight swim. The head of the bait gets real wide, with the back half following along in a slow uncoiling manner, giving the bait a life like appearance. The Crappie will swim at a crawl, all the way up to about moderate. At moderate speeds, I certainly reccomend keeping the rod tip low near the water. What you will notice is that the bait has quite a bit of lift, and will come to the surface- if your rod tip is up, the bait wants to come up and lay on its side... but, rod tip down allows the bait to stay true, and act as a natural wake bait. Moderate speeds produce a nice wake, along with some body roll that allows the bait to put off some flash and show its natural profile.

The bait also excels with reel handle bumps, giving it a controlled gliding action that also keeps the bait sub-surface at slower speeds. The long slow bumps will allow the bait to glide its furthest, but I would not consider this bait a "wide glide". Make your reel bumps firmer and more abrupt to make the bait do 180 degree turns on itself, maintaining a relatively tight glide while seeming to walk underneath the surface. Either way, the slow sinking nature of the bait allows it to hover in the strike zone on the pause.

The last retrieve (not in video, please try at home) is with short, sharp, and fast rod twitches (think topwater walk the dog). This retrieve makes the bait throw a very nice wake, basically walking right at the surface and creating a bulge that the fish can easily key in on. This is quite the workout, but will be a retrieve and look that most fish have never seen before.

I threw the Crappie on a Dobyns 795, 20 lb mono, and a Tranx 300. The 795 allows for those tighter pinpoint casts, getting that bait as close to cover as possible. It also makes the rod tip twitches easier. You can certainly bump up to a 806 for longer casts if desired. Braid would also be a fine choice for this bait, assuming you intend to fish it near the surface. Conversely, fluro may help to combat the lift that the bait has on a straight swim, but I have not expiramented with this... if you have, please drop a comment below to share your findings.

Thanks for watching and reading. Hope this info helps you understand what the KGB Crappie is all about. As always, thanks for all of the support, PMs, and offers to send baits.
