Spain floods kill at least 51 people | BBC News

At least 51 people are known to have died after torrential rain caused flash floods in south-eastern Spain, authorities have said.

Local officials in Valencia say it is "impossible" to put a final figure on the number of people who have died.

Much of the country has been badly hit by heavy rain and hailstorms, triggering rapid flooding across multiple areas. In the town of Chiva near Valencia more than a year's worth of rain fell in just eight hours.

I was 3 weeks in Valencia and this happened just 15 hours after leaving the country. I was also 2 weeks in Almería before I headed to Valencia. I wanted to go to Málaga but my 20 year old daughter kept saying she misses me and I should come back so she can come visit me. She normally does not put me under so much pressure. Now I get it..she felt it. 😢 I'm here wishing I'm there with the people of Spain because I love this country so much and it hurts to see them go through this. 4 times in Spain this year and I'm going back in December

Very sad news about the deaths - tragic loss of life. The BBC will no doubt blame climate change as usual and miss the facts that the Turia river has been notorious for flooding for centuries, for example the Great Flood of 1957 killed at least 81 people. These problems will increase across the globe unfortunately because more and more development is occurring on flood plains, and natural drainage is being replaced with more concrete. A frightening fact I recently read was that between 2000 and 2015 the population living in flood prone areas grew by at least 60 million people - this madness needs to stop.
