I've always fell firmly on the side of the Atari 8-bit computer. But will playing some Commodore 64 games sway my opinion that it's better? Find out as I play as many C64 games as possible!

Flimbo's Quest is one of the best looking sounding games on the C64, great platformer.

My friend had an Atari 800 with hundreds of pirate games on disk so I got to play C64 and Atari all the way from 1983 to 1987. Great days.

Great video. Try some of these in PAL mode (vs. NTSC). The Commando music sounded faster than usual, and it's probably also why the scrolling was glitchy. Possibly also why Cybernoid didn't work for you. Also check out some of the newer games from Protovision and Psytronik! I just recently got Planet X2 and Polar Bear in Space, which I liked a lot.

Growing up, I had a C64 & a close friend had an Atari 800XL, I always felt that the 2 systems were evenly matched when it came to graphics and games.

Some recommendations for C64 games;

Ace of Aces*
Aliens (Activision)
Barbarian (sword fighting)
Buggy Boy/Speed Buggy
Elite*
Ghostbusters*
Gyruss
Impossible Mission*
Leaderboard Golf
Lode Runner (Press CTRL-Z to turn off the iris effect!)
Mountie Mick's Death Ride
Raid over Moscow (once your plane is up, press F7 to open the hangar door)
Realm of Impossibility
Saucer Attack (shallow gameplay, great graphics)
Space Taxi
Speedball (I like it better than Speedball II)
Stealth
Street Sports Baseball
Stunt Car/Track Racer
Wizball*
Zaxxon (Synapse version)

*You'll probably need to read the manual for these games. Elite in particular is a rather complex game. It's probably not all that appealing in today's world, but it's pretty impressive that it's a fully 3D space combat and trading simulation in just 64K of RAM, on a 1Mhz machine with no 3D hardware.

My first exposure to the Commodore was in 6th grade, and I can honestly say it's been my favorite retro computer ever since. Such a wonderful library of games too! Have fun my friend, the C64 is pretty epic!

My second “console” after my 2600. Loved it as a teen. My sis ended up with the NES, while this was my thang.

Joystick ports - Some programmers thought it made sense to use port 1 for one player games, however port 1 shared some IO line with the keyboard, such that moving the joystick and pressing the button would be read by the C64 as keyboard input. So other programmers figured it made more sense to use port 2.

Alien Syndrome - I never felt this was a good port because of the terrible push-scrolling that requires you to get close to the edge to scroll the screen.

Aliens - It's not real obvious from the display, but you're basically turning inside a room, then when you click on the door, you go to an adjoining room. The map is HUGE and you have to find your way to the armory, the control room, etc. I never had this back then, and to be honest, I find the way it displays the rooms to be a little disorienting since it's hard to tell when you're looking at a different wall.

Arkanoid 2 - I liked the first one better because you could play it with paddle controllers.

Bionic Commando - Glitches like that were common when running PAL games on NTSC machines. When you see stuff like that, try PAL mode. In fact, you should probably assume that around 99% of the C64 games on the net are PAL mode. Also, there's a HORRIBLE American version that was written from scratch.

Commando - When you get to the point where the two enemy soldiers have a prisoner, always go to the left of the large mound. If you try to go to the right, you'll get stuck on that little rock every time. Also, play Commando Arcade, it has all the levels of the arcade version and some graphical improvements.

It's funny - I had C-64 growing up, and had hundreds of games due to having a friend who had access to European pirated games, but I don't think I recognize any of the games you have. Edited: I had Bruce Lee and Buck Rogers.

Yea.. That was actually Beyond Castle Wolfenstien, and it was broken.. The map should not look like that. Find another disk image.. It also needs several keyboard commands so it will be helpful to find a scan of the manual.

Nice video. It feels like home for me. Many memories. Many of these C64 games doesn't sound right in NTSC though

That was fun! Especially blue max . Lol. Some very nice looking games there though. My first computer was Apple II+. The games weren't as good but we had just as much fun making bootlegs and trading them

Mate, you didn't start with some of the best C64 games like "Impossible Mission", "Pirates", "Raid Over Bungelling Bay" or "Raid Over Moscow"! "Blue Max" didn't work for you as you had the joystick in the wrong port. It was very common for most C64 games to have the joystick in port 2.
