If a country can sell fighter jets abroad, that means it can attract customers for sophisticated weapons that can sell for upwards of $100 million, which in turn proves that the country has appeal as a strategic partner. It’s no surprise, then, that Beijing has hankered to become a major fighter exporter for some time.

Most data regarding Chinese Air Force on English media are severely outdated. Both J-7 and J-8 have already been largely phased out of active service, with only around 50-60 J-7G variant and 50-60 J-8F variant still in active service. These are upgraded versions and their capabilities are comparable to early 3rd gen fighters. China also operates more than 200 J-16 as of 2021, and these are gradually phasing out Su-30MKK and MK2. And J-20 has also entered mass production, with anywhere around 60 to 150 currently in active service.

don't forget there is also J-16, which is arguably the best one in Sukhoi series. China actually brought the whole Su-27 production line from Russia in the 90s. and this almost cost all China's foreigner cash reserve at that moment. Its not reverse engineer, its actually better quality and fixed whole lot of bugs in original Su-27 design.
