Edward Witten : I learned general relativity in a very exciting period of about ten days, from the book of Steve Weinberg. I mean, I tried to learn more from the book of Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler, and I did learn more from it, but my opinion of the book was what it remains now, which is that it’s got a lot of great stuff in it, but it’s a little bit hard to use it to learn systematically. The book I found useful for studying systematically was by Steve Weinberg. (AIP Oral History Interview)

For those tired of books full of trains anc cones illustrations which never show mathematical formulas, people who realized that these are in fact the juiciest part of Relativity and are not afraid of them but, at the same time, are not (and will never be) physicists or mathematicians, I recommend "Einstein's theory A rigorous introduction for the mathematically untrained" by Oyvind Gron and Arne Naess. It is indeed the best way ("paper-wise") to study something as complex as this.

(and for the owner of this channel, when we can nowadays learn Relativity from the very MIT (the MIT 8.962 General Relativity, Spring 2020 looks like yummy yummy), it would be interesting to know your own selection of videos about these and other subjects)

Great overview and I'm glad your opinion confirms my view of most of the books here which I've also read. However, I'm not impressed with Wald despite its reputation because I believe it's far too mathematically biased at the expense of developing a mature view for the physics. Another two books I recommend are first: Relativity Made Relatively Simple by Andrew Steane, who has a users page on Physics Stack Exchange and has written many interesting papers on radiation reaction and the LAD equation. Secondly Sidney Coleman's Lectures on Relativity for graduates.
