In our latest Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video we look at whether or not being a Breton be worthwhile from a lore perspective. A fun little hypothetical.

The Whole "Worth It?" Series:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.

The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

A human race with natural expertise in magick and magick resist. Not to mention natural proficiency in politics.

Since you're human you're not going to be treated as harshly by the other human races, possibly respected by the Magick welding races such as the Altmer and Dunmer. And if you're a knight or other swordsman you could gain respect from Redguards, Nords, and Imperials for your battle prowess.

They're Kings, Queens, Politicians, Mages, Spellswords, Knights, and more.

They're the perfect human race for really anything.

Edit: Spelling errors.

My second favorite race; their inborn Dragonskin ability is undeniably one of the best racial abilities in all Tamriel. Coupled with the Atronach Stone & enchanted gear to boost Magicka Regen and with the Mage Armor perks, they are virtually indestructible against other mages. Their natural boost to the Conjuration Skill means that they have the skill to raise undead almost right out of Helgen and can thus start the game with a temporary thrall if they so desired once they obtain the Raise Zombie tome in Riverwood from Lucan. Choosing The Ritual Stone also means more thralls to soak up damage once per day (I find this is useful early in game to allow time to level up sufficiently)

I made a Breton dude for a battlemage build and guess what I named him?

Jagar Tharn II and he aims to be the most powerful battlemage in Tamriel

I like being a Breton. It is a good character because early in the game, the dragonskin resistance to magic helps when you are attacked by dragons and vampires who always use magic attacks. This can be exceptionally helpful during early gameplay. That does not mean it is the best, just one of the best depending on your play style. Thanks for this series, I am really enjoying it.

The last four or five characters I've played have been Breton. I've used your "Battlemage" guide for all of them and love the versatility of the class and the race. The last couple of times I've played a Breton "throwback". In "my" lore, 1 in about 10, 000 Bretons (or any other appropriately small ratio) are born as "throwbacks", looking more like Mer than Man, but are still innately Breton, with ears more pointed, eyes a little more slanted, skin-tones less pale. Current character is Deklan of Morcot (a cot hold a few miles outside of Evermor), son of a college trained mage (father) and a Breton Legate (mother) in the Imperial Legion who met during the Great War. She taught Deklan sword and board, Dad taught him novice Mage spells. When a recent purge by the Thalmor occurred in the village, Dad sent Deklan to Skyrim to get college training, and that's how he ended up staring at a chopping block in Helgen.

Breton and Altmer were the two I was looking forward to most. Good stuff guys!

My favorite race in Skyrim. You get free backup in the form of a familiar from the beginning. They make great battlemages or any other class if tuned right, plus the magic resists are for all magic, dragon breath included, not all of them breathe fire.

Breton was my first pick in Oblivion when I first played for the first time in 2007. God, that was such a treat. Nowadays, I have a trinity of races i choose: Bretons, Dunmer, and Khajiit. One from men, one from Mer, and one from beasts. Although, I suppose they're all Merric in a way.

is being a Breton worth it?
-cute.
-innate resistance to harmful magic.
-half elf, so 50% better than nords.

given that I am Welsh irl, and the Bretons are losly based on the Gauls, who are the ancient ancestors of the Welsh, Irish and French, I am already a Breton...
