I think what a lot of people are missing in this scene is shadow wants Sonic to kill him so he can be with Maria. This movie went really deep with emotions.

I absolutely adore Shadow in this scene. He really is a fearless one. He can fight Super Sonic in his base form and he isn't afraid of him, he isn't afraid to die. He knows he would die anyway when Gerald destroys the planet. He admits Sonic's right for revenge and he wants to prove that he was right about revenge. Sad that Shadow thinks he has nothing to live for except revenge. Brave, honest, strong willed, he is such a marvelous creature in this film.

This movie was soooo good. They really drove home "show don't tell" in the movie. And it was perfect. No exposition or monologue to tell the audience what a character is feeling, rather they show the emotions, intentions and feelings. Works everytime.

This moment is so beautifully sad. Shadow was going to just let himself die. Not only to be with Maria again, but he also felt he deserved it. By his own code, when he hurt Tom, he’d basically committed an unforgivable sin. If he was justified in avenging Maria, Sonic was justified in avenging Tom. And I think it haunted him too, realizing he’d hurt an innocent person in his anger.

One thing I don't think people noticed is how keanu being shadow also enhances Ben shawartz's proformance as sonic through contrast. Not just as the characters but in real life.

People are saying that "Shadow wants to die to be with maria" which is a good reason but like he said when they started the fight, shadow thought sonic took the path of revenge and thought he respectfully had the right to kill him and go down the same path as him.
