Wow, I was just using a 57 on a cranked Ampeg VT40, and gotta say for distorted guitar amps it cuts great! But I do like my SM7B on chimey Fender amps, with the foam off. It seems to capture the lower mid range, and get the high end not to be shrill. But on a bassy, mid range Marshall or high gain, 57s really do the job and sound good in a mix. If you need more bass, mic the back if it’s open back. Otherwise a room mic is good as well.

I really think the foam affects the SM7B a lot. I keep it on for singers sometimes. But off it can be used as a live drum overhead, high hats and decent on clean to overdrive guitars with low mids. But it get that snarl of high gain guitars, 57 is always a winner.

Also a m160 mic is a good way to go! But a bit more expensive than the two. I think it’s a good ribbon choice as a 3rd mic choice.
