Why Do People Freeze Eggs?

I just had a surgery where they removed eggs from my body. You know, the kind that can meet up with sperm to make a baby.

How and when people are having kids is changing, but our bodies aren’t.
As we get older, it can get harder to have kids when we want to. But doctors have found a way to remove human eggs, freeze them, then unfreeze them to use later. They can even fertilize eggs to make embryos and freeze those.
Basically, cryosleep exists! Just for tiny cells.

Here’s how this works - and why people do it.

But... what's the process really like? To answer that question, watch our longer episode.

Her child gets to say that he's like Captain America because he was frozen for decades

All I can imagine is humans in 500 years sending pods full of eggs and sperm to other star systems to be fertilized upon arrival...that would be wild

My wife died of cervical cancer 28 years ago. We harvested 5 embryos and I fertilized them. They have been in cold storage since. Do you think it’s possible that they could still be viable? By the way, I love what you do. The manner in which you present complex scientific information is remarkable.

You’ll never had to tell that kid to chill

Super important for this kind of medical science to be focused on more by mainstream media!

Do you mean mature as many eggs as possible? Aren’t we born with all our eggs?

That is how we had our first kid, and my wife is currently carrying the second one. Our first daughter came out so smart, pretty, and super energetic!

Though even if you unfreeze the eggs, there's no garuntee they'll result in a child

Imagine if the eggs get mixed up. And you get someone else's eggs as yours

I'm so glad you explained what kind of eggs you were talking about. I was lost there for a minute. Thank you

This is a good opportunity to remind us all that a human "egg" is called an "ovum", and the plural is "ova".
I like these words. 😊

This is sad ..I had to do this procedure for an IVF because my tube are blocked . I had 19 eggs .only 2 get fertilized but non of them served in the end.

I have a friend with three kids, all from the same egg harvest and fertilization. They were born three years apart, but she loves telling people that they were conceived on the same day.

I love science communicators that are able to deliver their message with a smile and enthusiasm and genuine excitement. As someone who only consumes the content but does not do the research themselves i must say monotone videos are dull and often do not deliver the message in a memorable way.
