Hi everyone! Thanks for your patience! It was Father's Day yesterday, which is why Movie Math is going up today.
I mentioned this in last week's MM, I tweeted about it, and I put a note on my page on the community tab.
I'm sorry if you missed those updates.

The thing about Latinos is that we are not a monolith, we are composed of different counties and cultures. So, just because a movie focus on, for example, a Mexican actor / story, that does not mean it would attract Latinos with different heritages.

I'm in Mexico and watching Inside Out on Friday was INSANE. I hadn't seen a theater this packed since Endgame.

Inside out 2 was HUGE in Mexico, movie sites collapsed and every single screening was packed! Haven’t seen that in a while

Latino movie goer here. I think the reason why Latino don't go to movies with Latino leads is because Hollywood does a bad job handling Latino representation. The forced spanglish and other factors are a turn off.

Shrek is what made animation huge for latin america. The dub with Eugenio Derbez was genius, so much that even the creators of the movie said the movie had a bigger reaction when they were test screening the latin american dub.

Weekend without movie math felt incomplete 🎉

The second highest animated (and Pixar) opening of all time, just behind Incredibles 2. Congrats Pixar, you really needed this win.

3:56 The Inside Out franchise is huge in Mexico and many other Latin American countries. Us Latinos don’t really put too much attention to representation as American audiences or if the movie has a Latino character or not, we just love good stories. My theater in Texas was packed and didn’t mind the hectic entry lol. And considering more AMC theaters are offering Spanish dubbed showtimes, even more Latinos are willing to go to the theaters.

I cried a little when I thought about all the dads taking their little daughter to go see a movie for Fathers Day 🤧🤧

I live in a mostly Latino market. It should be pointed out that many animated films are offered in Spanish dub in our market.

The one thing about the Latino audience....it's Father's Day weekend...us Latinos have lots of kids....Inside Out 2 is a kids' movie....

Speaking as a Latino. Most of the Latino leads feel too forced and lack real appeal. Hollywood tries to make leads that are Latino instead of making leads that just happen to be Latino.

Isn't it ironic that one of the major themes of Toy Story is dealing with the fact that, the time will come that you have to put away your toys and grow up.. and yet Disney just can't seem to. It's time to put away Toy Story.

Imagine people going to see a well crafted movie with a good story the whole family can enjoy. Who knew?

Latinos will show up
1. If the content is good.
2. If the content AND marketing doesn’t feel like it’s forced/pandering.
3. If the entire family will have a good time (this even applies to horror lol).

^You need at least 2 of the 3.

As an American who lives near the U.S/Mexico border and visits Mexico quite often, I have to say almost anything animated (especially Disney related) often has potential big business in Mexico. Also in regard to the huge walk-up business with Latin American audiences, I feel like the reason for that is that, at least from my point of view/city, Mexico doesn’t have the most tech-savvy type of audience. I had gotten my Inside Out tickets the day before my screening with only 5 tickets being sold for my showtime while my screening was sold-out and packed by the time my showtime came around. Also, concession stands were PACKED, like literally “out of the theatre” packed with lines while anything mobile order related was free of any line at all. Just wanted to once again clarify that it’s just my experience, but interesting to see that it made so much walk-up business in other parts of Latin America as well.
