My autistic kids (now adults) don't remember any of the wonderful visits and holidays, and the fun I helped them enjoy... it kinda hurts, but I have to make do with remembering that it all made them the people they are now. ❤❤

We all have aphantasia, ranging from major (daughter) through moderate (son) to minor (me).

Orion, thank you so much for sharing your excellent education in smaller bites. I know I can take small bytes of your info in & understand it. I may not remember 100% of it tho (memory issues that may be due to a lack of or disrupted blood flow to my brain. I can't say "thank you" enough for all that you are doing for people who are being dismissed &/or ignored for NOT being NT (perfect thinkers according to THEM). 🙏🙌🤝👏👏

Again... Absolute opposite with hyperphantasia. It's like everything hurts and gives me PTSD. if I experience something new, I remember EVERYTHING even remotely like it in mental comparison... I'm always DISTRACTED.

I believe aphantasia is absolutely central to autism. It fits with so many of the known deficits and differences.
I suspect a much higher proportion of us have it than the estimates suggest. It's difficult to measure a facility like visual imagery accurately, when you've never had it. We don't yet have any really objective testing.

My memories of my childhood are triggered more by smells, and my happiest ones are periods where nothing much was going on, so the aphantasia thing might just be because our brains will not file anything in our memory bank during sensory overload or shutdown.

SDAM- severely deficient autobiographical memory, a very newly described and little researched phenomenon. I can’t remember most of my life except the timelines of things. I have a few sporadic memories.

Does this affect your executive functioning - where we record activities so we can work on auto pilot? For example getting milk out of the fridge do you struggle knowing where to put it back? My carotid artery dissected nearly 2 years ago & the resulting problems included short term memory loss, corroded neural pathways which meant I could take the milk out of the fridge but putting it back was an issue- I would go to put the milk in the pantry, oven & microwave before I had to look at the milk & actually tell my brain where it goes. Is it anything like that? (The not knowing where something goes not the issues from the dissection)

I’m autistic with CPTSD and have aphantasia. My memory around some things is very good but I feel like I have chunks of time missing from my memory. It’s very interesting.

I’m getting a diagnose done for autism and I can remember in full detail and describe what I have done or what other people have done but I always get told I’m wrong or it never happened like that but those people don’t remember nothing

Well I didn't know people saw pictures when they had memories. Yikes lol.
