Does HDR Impact Gaming Performance? Lets test 5 recent games with full HDR support (BF1, Destiny 2, Far Cry 5, Shadow of War and AC Odyssey) using GTX Titan Xp and RTX 2080 Ti to see what happens with our FPS.

Interesting that you chose percentage to measure the difference instead of Frames. The loss of frames look almost identical between generations.

this is pretty much a no brainer. color does impact performance a decent amount. games had a black and white option, we would get frame increase ( more so when comparing from hdr)

Testing with 3dMark I saw a 5% performance increase by enabling HDR on Windows 10. RTX 2080

FWIW, if you can get hold of the Windows Fall 2018 update, you can just leave the HDR switch in Windows thrown at all times. They've solved the purple screen issues when swapping between SDR and HDR content (finally), and the desktop defaults to 444 8-bit with HDR brightness enabled, so once you calibrate brightness to your liking you don't need to keep tweaking settings depending on what you are doing. You do get a crisper image going into the nVidia control panel and tweaking things, but then you end up bringing back the games issue because they try to force 10-bit color and the driver won't let them.

Bottom line, if you just want to set it and forget it for all content, reset your driver color settings to defaults, throw the switch, adjust your brightness, and there you go.

If your monitor has a driver it should be fine letting windows Control HDR first before starting the game. I think you gained performance in 1 game because the GPU didn't have to do the color processing

You mentioned you experienced a bit of latency when HDR was on. Maybe you could have measured frametimes in Afterburner, if rendering time actually increases?
Just for comparison, was there a possibility to throw in some GPU from other camp - like Radeon RX Vega or 5x0?

not sure the HDR look it self is worth it for me tbh so far i have not felt the whole "wow" factor from it at least not enough to replace my gsync monitor for it

Should've included Forza Horizon 4. I'm seeing 14% drop in FPS on GTX 1070 at 1440p Extreme settings. Very disappointing.

Hdr is great when it works. For me that's not most of the time.
