They still give full circles of track for train sets just not the ones that are not motorized as a way to keep down the price like the Harry Potter sent. You mentioned is over 1000 pieces. I can’t imagine how much it would be with a Full Circle of track.

Okay, to be fair that Hogwarts Express set isn't a TRAIN set, its a Harry Potter set that happens to be a train. The Hogwarts Express' purpose isn't to go around a track, it's purpose is meant to fill a scene within Harry Potter, and it was always like this since the first Hogwarts Express released in 2001. While the first Hogwarts Express came with instructions on how it can be powered, all other Hogwarts Express models that came out after it were never intended to be powered without personal extensive modification.
However, you look at a modern train set, such as sets 60337 and 60336, its purpose is to go around a track, therefore it comes with a complete circle of tracks for it to go around as they are designed to be powered.

Actually that makes sense because the type of people who are buying Lego trains either already have more track than they could possibly use, or are willing to buy the tracks separately.

As a train fan and model railroader I always felt Lego missed with the trains, at least the powered ones. I don’t know quite why, but they just never had the same play value as trucks or planes I guess

Bought a Lego train set for the kids at Christmas. Can confirm, it comes with a full circle of track! 😂 Also, goes damm fast at full speed, and the carriages fit Lego horses.
