'Modern Cartoons Are Lazy' - No, You're Just Wrong

"Cal-Arts Style," otherwise known as "Thin Line Animation" has been a divisive topic amongst cartoon fans. But do bean mouths, noodle arms, and bobblehead proportions really mean the end of artistic integrity in the world of animation?

After the release of Turning Red (2022) dredged up vitriol from people who despised the art style, I decided to talk about Cal-Arts style, animation, and aesthetic trends in toons.

Not all of Modern Day cartoons are lazy. LOOK AT INFINITY TRAIN, AMPHIBIA, THE OWL HOUSE, KID COSMIC, ARCANE, INSIDE JOB, AND SO MANY OTHER SHOWS THAT HAS DIFFERENT ART STYLES AND HAVE WONDERFUL CONCEPTS!

I think the biggest reason reason these cartoons suck is not because they have the same art style, if that was the case we'd see more complaints like this for anime. It's because the style they use is a shitty art style from the ground up.

It's an ART style for ANIMATION that sacrifices most of the principles of ART and ANIMATION.
It's a SHAPE based Art style that limits what SHAPES you can use. It's about as dense and confined as a prison cell.

The fixed completely circular eyes don't allow for much expression and dynamic posing is pretty much non existent in this art stye. Anatomy is completely thrown out the window making it look lifeless. It doesn't have a variety of shapes to make of for it's lack of volume and no volume to make up lack of shape variety.

It's a discombobulated inbred abomination of an art style.

Most cartoons that use this art style die with out a trace of a fandom. All of the cartoon mentioned here aren't half of the shows with this art style.
