Time to Upgrade | R7 5700X3D

It's been five and a half years, and it's finally time to start upgrading some PC parts. Starting with the CPU and ram. From an AMD Ryzen 5 3600x to an R7 5700X3D, also 32gb of ram to 64gb.

Overall it cost me $300 US and I'm pretty satisfied. This video was rendered in 4K at 24fps, and finished in 7-minutes and 30-seconds.

NEVER thought this video would pop off like this so I want to address a couple common questions.

1. Why an X3D chip if you don’t game all too much? Why not used 5900x?

Fair point, but I felt more comfortable buying brand new off the shelf and getting the best of both worlds instead of risking a used chip, which I’ve had varied experiences with used parts in the past. Plus I still link up with some guys here and there for a game night so it’s not a complete waste.

2. Why lower your refresh rate from 144hz to 100hz?

I didn’t my mean prolong in the sense that the parts would die faster if set at 144hz. I meant “prolong the usefulness of my parts”, because my original config had an easier time pumping a consistent solid 100fps with the more demanding-ish games I play as opposed to 144fps. At 144hz I would notice stutters and drops that felt less comfortable to me than just cruising at 100hz.

3. 650W isn’t enough for a new GPU?

Like I said I’ve been out of the hardware world for about 5 years and haven’t been SUPER interested in a new card. I did eye up some 7800XT’s since the price was attractive and I saw minimum recommended power of 700W. Then many in the comments said to look into 4070’s it 4070 Supers, which will be O.K. with 650W.

I like to be decently above the minimum recommendations personally, in the past I was definitely an over clock tinkerer. These days it seems like everyone just runs on auto settings so maybe a 4070 or Super would be alright.

THANK YOU for the random sudden influx of views and comments. I APPRECIATE it and welcome your inputs and discussions! I’m not an expert in anything by any means lol.

I am staying on AM4. Recently upgraded to 4000MHz Ram on a R5 5600X3D. Happy with the results.

This is my level of pc hardware "enthusiasm". Sensible, minor upgrades, older games, etc. I'll give ya a sub for a while and see where this goes.
Greetings from frozen hell, Alaska. Don't let ur meat loaf.

BTW, I got 650w psu too and it run fine with 5700x3d/ 7900xt. My Video card is slightly under volt/under clock to keep the heat down. 5700x3d is a beast in gaming. Enjoy your new CPU Bud!

I just upgraded from a 5600x and a 6700xt to a 5700x3d and a 7900xtx. I now feel comfortable waiting for AM6

I'm on the same boat, I'm upgrading from an AMD 2700x. To me, it's just wild that I can still purchase components that are up to today's specs with a motherboard that is about 7 years old. While I think the 5700X3D will be the last upgrade for the AM4 platform (personally), it's amazing I was able to get about 10 years from every other component. I feel like for the past 20 or so years, everytime I put a PC together within 3 years or so it was completely obsolete!

Can't wait! Just upgraded my bios last night to make sure I can just pop in the chip and I'm G2G.

Watched this twice. Presentation, delivery, very no nonsense. Glad you're getting an influx of views! Cheers!

The 5700 X3D is a fantastic upgrade if you are still on am4. With that 1070 TI gpu, you're not going to see a huge increase in gaming performance simply because the GPU is the bottleneck. But you will experience much smoother frame rates regardless of that. Nice video thank you for sharing.

Pretty nice upgrade. I'm probably going to stay on am4 until am6 comes out and matures a little. Rocking a ryzen 7 5800x3d, 32 gb of ram, and an rtx 3080. I'll occasionally play newer harder to run games, but I mainly play games from the late 2000s to early 2010s. Still the best era of games imo. Just finished gta 4 and man what an amazing game it is!

I have a 5800x3d and honestly.. I pity people who have the upgrade bug, always staying on top, worrying about performance during a time where optimization is not something most devs care about lately.

AM4 is a perfectly fine and capable platform. I love it.

Oh btw: im rocking a 650w power supply with a 3070 ti lol. Undevolted it though, because that GPU gets loud and hot. You're more than fine keeping your power supply.

if they can fix the driver overhead issue, the intel b580 would be a very nice upgrade for that system

that 650W is with even a 7900XT / 4070S. No sweat

I also replaced my 3600X for the 5800X3D a year back, and it was definitely noticeable. I don't really game much either but the stuttering i had with the 3600X were no longer there. Brought new life to my AM4 system.

I upgraded from a 3700X to 5700X3D earlier this year and the upgrade in games especially 1% lows was HUGE, stuttering eliminated, later in the year I upgraded from 5700XT to 4070 Super and 16gb to 32gb ram, now that upgrade was immense, the 4070 Super uses exactly the same power as the 5700XT (220w) and even lower undervolted (well under 200w) with no loss in performance, I used my old parts to upgrade my stepsons PC which he only uses for Fortnite and Football/F1 manager with the 3700X and 5700XT, gotta love AM4's longevity.
Great video, good luck with your channel. 👍

Yes you need a smaller capacity usb for Fat, 32gb iirc.

Just yesterday I did a really meaningless upgrade (on paper) from 5600x to 5700X3D. I play a couple of CPU heavy games and already felt like I got my money's worth: in The Finals my avg fps rose about 10-15% but my 1% lows are probably 30% higher, and because of that, the game is feeling a lot smoother. GPU (3070ti) utilization is also around 93-96% whereas previously it was 85-90% majority of the time because the CPU was keeping me from getting those sweet, sweet frames.

FAT32 works with up to 32 gig drives. Thank the gods my bios upgrade went smooth as butter. I really hate troubleshooting HW stuff since I'm not well versed in all that stuff.

Looking at your upgrade from the productivity side, a 5700x or 5800x would've probably been a marginally better upgrade, since those CPUs seem to do better in productivity benchmarks I've seen. Higher clock speed maybe? Tho the 3D cache is really good for gaming and is definitely the better choice in the long run.

Why did I write all these obvious things in a really long comment by youtube standards? For the algorithm, I guess? Good, tight editing and pleasant sound. All the best to you and everyone else who happens to read this comment.

5 years & a half? Sir, u actually had a great am4 platform serves u so well. Perhaps now another 5 years. Before a major upgrade like am5 (or intel). Being that said, AMD doing great work there.

Congratulations on ur upgrade.

at the start of the video, i thought it was gonna be some shit, low subscriber channel, but a few minutes in, i absolutely love the pacing and editing. also having your monitor at 144hz 24/7 won’t affect your parts at all

AM4 has been a brilliant platform for me. I switched from a Z70 that started as a 3rd gen i5 but ended up stuck for much of it's life as a 4th gen i7. I bought a B450 Tomahawk Max PCB because a friend was upgrading their 1700 to a 3700X back in Nov 2019 and sold me the 1700 for 80 Quid. By the time I sold the PCB, DDR3 and SATA M2 drive I more or less got the upgrade for the £100 I paid for the board. Faster core for core chip than the i7 and 8 of 'em, DDR4 and an NVMe, blew me away with how much faster the computer was for so little money spent. I've only replaced the CPU once so far, I swapped the Zen part for an R5 5500, it was about 100 quid a year and a half ago. I have upped the RAM to 32GB since, and added more SS storage. Oh, and one of those cheap Thermalright tower coolers (it's all you need up to 8 cores on AM4, especially on the 3D chips). I have been thinking of one of these chips, as my computer's final Pokemon evolution to just keep me ticking over until I get a look at AM6.
