My sons were the recipients of their education from Special Education Teachers. You can not say enough kind things about these professional, patient and hard-working people. Americans like to have control of what's going on in their government. Hashing ideas out in the old Town Hall meetings was an effective way of accomplishing agreement on issues. As Rachel Maddow pointed out, the Republican Party has been working for many years now to quietly gerrymander congressional districts in order to make it more difficult for Democrats to win, even when they have the popular vote. However, if you look the gerrymander has worked against the Republicans as well. Look at the Senate Republicans. They are all old men. Then look at what we managed to elect to the House. They are younger and vibrant. They are eager to serve. They reflect the wonderful diversity of the citizens of America. The Republicans have stagnated and starved off any chance of their replacement. The diverse House is ready to jump in with both feet. Good Luck, you've got lot's of work ahead of you.

"Conservative" is a synonym for "ignorant and repressive".

Oddly...I've considered running for some type of office. Why? Because I believe in the America that makes everyone feel like they belong to this country. Maybe one day I'll see that.

The teacher strike also points to another political line besides the urban/rural divide. It is the educational divide with more educated voters being capable of logic and less educated voters who are more gullible and susceptible to inane lies. Please note: All teachers have at least a bachelor's degree and are therefore less likely to be gullible Trump supporters.

"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". So here's the question: Is the "system" rigged towards a general maximising of these core political issues ... or is it playing favourites? And if so, why? How? What needs to get fixed?

Americans are trying to get our congress to actually represent our country. We're over 50% female and our congress is still mostly male, especially the senate. That'll change in 2020. I hope we last until then.

the way you treat teachers is contingent upon the way you wish to coerce others', neighbors', children to learn only what you imagine yourself as knowing. The USA is painful to watch on the vital issue of education alone.

Many species have no transmitted social knowledge, but the ones who fail to do so, are seemingly better equipped than our altricial species. Even many reptiles, amphibians, fish, contribute behavioral and communicated knowledge at higher rates and levels than do a considerable proportion of US residents.
Consciousness, retained awareness and memory, are products of the limbic system [A brain shared with fish, birds, reptiles, salamanders, frogs], we have recently learned from neurosciences. TO force avoidant ignorance upon children is a peculiarly human thing.
Do we really want to become authoritarian submissives, mere demented slaves and ants subject to "superiors?"
