Ethan Hawke's character really seemed like he was going to be a deadbeat dad, but even though he isn't initially very present in his kids' lives, he demonstrates a clear investment in who they are and how they've been. It's a nice hint that he's a genuinely good guy who has some growing up to do and foreshadows his eventual turn into a decent family man.

Ethan Hawkes character in this was incredible. He started low from living in a small home with his friend. And then goes on to have another wife and another kid while still giving love to his other kids. Now that is an amazing father.

This was about 2005-2006. Generation X’ers raising Millennials was frowned upon and the X’ers were still looked at as irresponsible kids themselves. Yet he’s dealing with their preteen awkwardness very nicely

Relate a lot to this scene. Nobody wants to hear you go "it was okay" when they ask how your day was. That is, if they truly care. Details, people. I hate getting hit with "it was fine" or some such. If my hypothetical kid did that to me I'd probably cry on the spot.
