How does it affect the ships, the equipment on board, and the crew?

This video takes you on a journey through the impressive power of nature, where we explore the effects, impact, and protective mechanisms of lightning on US Navy ships and aircraft. We discover how these ships are built to withstand the brutal forces of nature and how they defend themselves against the destructive impact of lightning strikes.

This video is a fraud. I was based on a US Navy ship for years, "Haze grey and underway, " as we used to say, and mostly topside. I never saw lightning strike a ship at sea. I have seen cases in which the ship glowed with Saint Elmo's fire, because of the mass of electrons in the air, but never lightning. None of the videos depicted an actual strike on a carrier or any other ship at sea. That's especially interesting since every square inch of a carrier flight deck is covered with video cameras. The boat that was split in half was a civilian vessel moored to a pier, which gave the lightning a grounding point. The damage control videos appeared to all be training exercises. Good eye candy, but more fluff than fact.

Lightning travels from the ground up. Electrons flow from negative to the positive.

HELP ! YOU'VE OVER DOSED ON DRAMA ! Our carrier (USS Forrestal) never had a problem with lightening & I doubt any US Navy vessel ever has.
