Minecraft is the most important game of the decade

Few games have had the sort of cultural impact that Minecraft has. We're looking back at three ways Minecraft changed the landscape of media — and streaming — as we know it.

Check out the people interviewed in this video:

With all that technical talk, I want to add a bit of the emotional side:
Firstly, the music. It's quite unique and fits the game really well in a super weird way. Secondly, I think Minecraft is beautiful. Even without all the shaders and texture packs. And yeah people complain about the terrain generation, and maybe rightfully so, but watching a sunset from your cosy little starter hut with the furnace crackling next to you...

And yes, most of that is nostalgia. We grew up with it and it reminds us of simpler times, so it's not as much a factor of why Minecraft became this big.

But it definitely plays into why it STAYED this big for this long.

I love how they got people like Lewis and Simon, Mr Squishy, RT, Sparklez. It makes it much more interesting and is such a good idea

Shadow of Israphel was such an important series for so many people. It made me want Minecraft. Been chasing that high ever since

Another great thing is how Minecraft handles mods. It actively encourages them, being open and supportive. And that’s really admirable. It’s something a lot of devs will try and discourage. Hatsune Miku really did the world a favor.

I DID NOT EXPECT LEWIS AND SIMON! my 12-year-old and 20-year-old self both squealed simultaneously lol

Strange timing on this video as I have recently re-discovered the magic of Minecraft through playing the hell out of it with some friends as a way to stay connected during this period of social distancing. I think the nostalgia is what really hit us as Minecraft is essentially what our childhoods are made of. The game just takes me back to a simpler time, it's really amazing.

simone: minecraft fans and their talent push the game to its limits
me, remembering that time two days ago during social distancing when my friends and i tried to exploit a glitch to swim through the nether and into the overworld: ah,

Another thing I think is relevant to note is that for a lot of members of generation Z, Minecraft was essentially our first mainstream game. Before Minecraft, the only video games I had ever played were Horse Life Adventures 2, Super Scribblenauts, and Brain Games (all on the DS). When Minecraft first came out, I watched let's plays on YouTube on the TV sometimes, and thought it looked neat. When I started middle school, I was allowed to get a tablet. First thing I wanted to install? Minecraft PE. I'm a senior in high school now, and while I've definitely played a lot more games since then (the Zelda series quickly became my favourite!), I still have that old tablet with Minecraft on it (partly because I'm broke and can't get a faster device, partly because it hasn't broken yet so why replace it). Minecraft is the game that taught me about video games and how they influence popular culture.

They got my boys Xephos and Honeydew to speak truth in this. The mad lads that learned Minecraft in videos alongside me, before spinning a yarn so tangled and creative it blew my god damned mind.

And she didn’t even mention the massive servers like the Hive and Hypixel with thousands of players on them, or the mega builder groups like fyreuk

So glad Miku decided to take a break from her music career to make this masterpiece. She truly is so talented.

RT defeats the whole world with a shiny wooloo and is in a Polygon-video on the same week! Legend.

They interviewed the damn yogscast, hell yeah

Where’re my fellow “still watch the yogscast because their content still rocks” people?
“Simon and Lewis’ love affair with minecraft is over” they still play it, to be fair, just not as much and not on the main channel.

Not only was Minecraft such a groundbreaking game, but it also offered players years of non stop entertainment, whether it's through updates or new features and they always try to fix the game with any bugs and glitches the best they can.
