Even the domestic solar market is building. I'm just waiting for a PowerWall3 availability here in the UK (due September) for home solar. PW3 is LiFePO4 technology, so I feel happy with the safety of that. OK, smaller scale than megapacks, but you either have large and central, or distributed and local. The latter requires less infrastructure upgrades, so has merit.

Tesla sold cars at an average of 45k with a profit of 6500 per this Q1, which is about 14.4% profit margin.
1 Megapack (3, 900kWh) is about 1m USD befoer installation and tax, so a profit of 227k (~35 cars) is 22% profit margin.
That would mean the entire pack is 773k or a 3, 900 kWh battery, Cost of Production is 200 USD per kWh on a pack level.

This makes sense and have some margin even when CATL Tener goes to market.

Battery energy density is largely irrelevant for stationary storage. That is because the megapack only moves once.

By being able to store ALL (OK. Over 90%) of power produced by solar and wind batteries effectively increase their present production by 30-50% and reduces their Kwh cost equivalently.

Sam, don’t get lost in Tesla. Tony Seba predicted this. The only question is which company can move quickly enough to address this market.

The car market doesnt need to expand Viking, the trasition from ICE to electric will explode. For cars, its all about the recurring and high margin software that runs the cars $$$$ - car deliveries will keep surprising to the upside.

Last week the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned the Reagan-era 1983 Chevron Deference case that empowered federal agencies like the EPA and NHTSA to act unilaterally without an act of Congress.

This SCOTUS ruling could spell the end of EV and other green energy agendas - maybe not, depends on what Congress now does.

We can expect
additional.court cases to attempt to dismantel or redefine the various green mandates or even beef up the mandates - but now through elected officials rather than via mostly unknown bureaucrats. It means the 435 members of the House of Representatives will be lobbied to vote one way or the other - the reps won't be acting blindly as foes to the SCOTUS argue will happen. It probably means a more plodding deliberate regulatory offensive.

The megapack should no longer be competing with cars for batteries because Chinese batteries don't qualify for the tax credit. Just use those in Megapacks and use the others for cars.

What is the total market size for the Megapack

Reminds me of data centre GPUS, They supposedly have an 80-90% profit margin, even though they're excruciatingly difficult to make, cos companies will pay >$10k per unit.

My question is are the batteries for these energy storage packs coming from China and are they taxed as high as the batteries that go in EV's ? If American tariffs are not as high for grid storage batteries then of course the profit margins are going to be great. Also if there is no domestic competition for grid storage packs he has the whole market to himself and hard to argue you have to increase tariffs for competition that isn't there.

You are suggestig 1 megapack sells for $200, 000 over cost. Maybe that means they need to lower the cost; but the flip side is solar and wind don't work at all without battery storage; and one needs lots of Megapacs to provide one battery farm. While there aren't many such farms sold, and the total profit for such a farm is only a few million; the reality is this cost is passed on to consumers.

Sam, don't get me wrong, I'm a regular audience for your stuff.

But I remember you telling us how Tesla had a goldmine in the charging business. They could buy power when it was cheap and sell it to EVs at market rates. Pocketing big bucks.

Then Musk fired his entire charging team 😂

How many cycles can a megapak do, day & night, before capacity is too useless. It's not as good as a water turbine or stored gas pressure. Then how recycle? Iron batteries can last for decades.

I'm sure there are hundreds of car buyers, perhaps thousands for every megapack company purchaser so still worth it. :)

Sam, you hit the ball out of the park again! Your brilliant! Thx

Does TESLA have access to the megapacks sold? I mean whether TESLA can buy and sell the electricity on the exchanges and let the owner earn money, as is the case with the TESLA home storage units in the USA.

theres A LOT of phat to trim on grid scale batteries, profits are big because governments are investing and they did so before waiting for the tech to mature properly that takes advantage of more appropriate chemistry/tech

these profits are going to drop off a cliff in short order with LFP now coming into play and the emergence of more appropriate designs like calcium, aluminium, sodium, etc etc

and i don't see telsa maintaining their early mover advantage with lithium-ion, it's the wrong tech and no longer competitive for grid scale solutions in the changing market

profit here is all down to access to raw materials and processing capacity, tesla's name and past gov contracts will not sustain them in this area

When the world reaches the point of battery power that can support back up power of 24 to 48 hours.... We will have reached total parody.... Our devices use less power charge faster last longer .. prices will start to fall by 25% plus by 2026 on most EVs and Battery powered appliances and battery storage walls ...etc.
