The Russian president Vladimir Putin is often thought of as a strong leader that can DESTROY any Western journalist or liberal Russian with FACTS AND LOGIC. However, the truth is that Putin is really SCARED of debate: all of Putin's interviews and press conferences are highly scripted, and Putin has never participated in a single presidential debate in history. He is not used to hearing any criticism to his face, and in the very rare occasions when he does, he gets pretty angry. Today we will be watching the one time Putin got challenged right to his face: a video from a 2010 dinner meeting, in which the Russian Anti-Z musician Yuri Shevchuk from the legendary Soviet rock band DDT called Putin out on the lack of freedom of speech in the country. So, what happens when someone argues with Putin? And why is Putin so scared of debating anyone? Let's talk about it.

"Patriotism cannot be created by a poster" is an awesome quote.

Putin "Without democracy, Russia has no future...by the way that is not a warning, that is a promise".

So Putin pretending to not know DDT is like if Bush pretended not to know Michael Jackson?

Thank you Yuri for speaking up for those that don't have a voice. You're a hero.

You could see that Putin is ready to explode when Shevchuk spoke.

Pretty standard for authoritarians of all stripes. If they can’t control the message, that increases the risk of someone asking them a basic question that they either can’t answer, or can’t answer honestly without coming off as an obvious psychopath

We know why. He can't even handle a journalist or a political opponent without having them poisoned

The fact that this video was published shortly after Yekaterina Duntsova, the former TV journalist who said on social media that she would challenge Putin in Russia's "elections" in March because she wanted to end the war with Ukraine, was just banned from participating (three days after her application) only solidifies Roman's point here even further.

In 2000, I was introduced by a Russian friend from Moscow to the music of DDT. They're one of my favorites rock bands. I like to see that the lead singer is not afraid to be outspoken.

It's hard to look powerful and in control when the guy you are debating is not scared or paid by you 😂

Just to show how big Yuri Shevchuck is will give one example:

He visited on his own the Russian troops in Grozny just days after the ill-fated New Year's Eve assault. He did not spend time at their main base at Mozdok or Khankala but he wanted to be close to the frontlines and he managed to communicate with soldiers and officers from the Volgograd corps.
He spend between 2 weeks to a month in Chechnya so he can see for himself what is this war all about.
Later he did not forget his promise about supporting the troops and managed to sent a lot of lads to Germany for rehabilitation. He also supported them with getting new western metal limbs and wheelchairs as those made in Russia back in the 90s were totall dogshit.

Edit: if anyone is interested about his visit in Chechnya there are clips of his stay as he was recording everything even when soldiers have given him the stars of their fallen captain as remembrence and later he immortalize him in some verse he has created about him. Just check ДДТ/Chechnya in Youtube.

As a young american, I really appreciate seeing members of Russian music and civil society. Firstly, their critiques carry alot more weight than foreign analysts. Secondly, it demonstrates that democracy has a place in Russia outside of “western influence”, and that patriotism is compatible with the desire to improve life for the next generation no matter where you live.

To Peace, prosperity, and liberty for people everywhere including Russia.

I'm not surprised this guy got only a small fine for "discrediting the armed forces of the Russian Federation" while that girl who switched price tags in a St. Petersburg supermarket got 7 years.

What makes up a country is people. If the people struggle, the country struggles. If the people are exploited by the government, the country degrades.
