I’ve seen this video and the newer version of that video multiple times. Both versions are equally good. You can tell the differences in emotion on both versions, the way he looked in both versions, the way the song sounds, etc. I can’t believe he wrote this song as a 17 year old kid having a dream of being a pop star. Every time I hear this song, I wished I wrote it. He truly was gifted and it’s a shame that at times, he couldn’t see it within himself. I wished he knew how talented, handsome and amazing he was. RIP George Michael ❤️

This has more of a "Hall & Oates" feel which was the wave for blue eyed soul singers in the early 80s...recorded with the famous producer Jerry Wexler in good ole Muscle Shoals, Alabama, USA. Home of many r&B and soul music hit studios back in the 60s-80s.

This is the Jerry Wexler producer version recorded in USA, but George didnt like this version, and he was unhappy so he decided to first release the other very well known version which was his own creation, and its the best in my opinion...
I believe the song wouldn"t become a major success with the Wexler version

It was the second marriage for both of us. For me it was 20 years since my first divorce. My new bride wanted to see ..careless whisper', ... but I didn't realize how personal it would be for the two of us to see it together., we both knew that no matter what came our way, we would be together till the end. We held hands tightly as we left the theater that afternoon without speaking; but it was her story and she knew it even then. She died in my arms in 2009. I accidentally came across this video, looking for another song.
I remain single until I am laid to rest next to her, for that's where my heart is buried and my name is on the tablet that covers her, waiting...for me to join her in heaven.

Not going to say that this version wouldn’t have been a hit back in the 80s but I certainly don’t think it would have had the legs it has had to become an all time classic. This one is kind of a typical cheesy 80s video. Here the character in the story is shown as singing parts of the story, while the official one shows him telling his story through song while the story is just shown as him reminiscing. It has a much classier and timeless feel to it. Plus the singing parts and musical instruments are in perfect sync with the visuals, especially the last part where he is viewing the city and then the aerial view of him walking along his balcony. It’s just beautifully done in the official video! And then of course the iconic sax riff, which may actually be amongst the top 5 most recognisable instrumental pieces of music in the world today, may not have the same insane level of fame with this one. That 🎷 riff in the official one just drives your heart differently☺️
