Two weeks after moving to Long Term Care

Hi everyone, here we are a little over two weeks since Heather move to long-term care at Northwood. Still lots of ups and downs… Still changes with Heather. She's adapting, but I can see that her cognitive health is declining bit by bit. I'm also adapting, and also a little bit at a time. I'm starting to get into a visiting routine and route to really appreciate the benefits of being so close to her. I hope you enjoy your visit with us today, and keep the comments coming. We have quite a community here.

BACKGROUND
Heather first started showing signs of memory issues in early 2021, and in October 2021 she received the diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia, which is a form of frontotemporal dementia. Her cognitive decline since then has been rapid and steady, as frequently happens with early onset dementia. Her mobility has degraded at the same time, making the situation even more challenging.

The most commonly asked question on this channel: Can you bring your dog to visit her? And the answer is, yes! They actually encourage it, so I will be bringing Penny to visit.

Having been a nurse for 20+ years I can tell you that it horrible that you dumped her there. Its selfish. Those facilities are never okay. She will not be taken care of well. I'm so sad for her. Go ahead and tell yourself you did the right thing.

John, your channel is so popular not only because we are all interested in your journey with Heather, but also because you are such a likable, kind, and amazing guy!

Seeing Penny up on the bed with Heather with her tail wagging made me smile. ❤

Heather is Blessed to have such a great Husband. I grew up without my father in my life & when I married my life became a nightmare My husband passed away in his 50’s, a little over 4 yrs ago so now I’m alone with my peace Ur lucky to have ur daughter, as I never had children so I have no family I really enjoy watching u being so good to Heather. I’ve never had the experience of being treated so kindly as u treat Heather. Keep being a Great person!! 🙏🏼☮️

John, it’s worth it for penny! She misses her mama. She knows things have changed and she feels your emotions. Seeing Heather is important to penny. She is a good girl, don’t worry so much about how she behaves, as far as I can see, she is behaving in a completely normal, loving way.

Change is very hard, my son is on the Autism spectrum and is fourty-six years old when he turned fourty I made the very difficult decision to place him in a staffed residential home it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do I am seventy years old and I knew I had to have a plan for him when I am no longer here to take care of him. He has adjusted very well but I still struggle with my decision. Keep visiting and loving Heather for as long as you can ❤️🙏🏻

You are absolutely the best definition of "To love and to hold until death do us part". You are such a kind human and remember that it’s okay to take care of yourself. I love that you are able to walk or bike to be with Heather.

Hi! I think when you take Penny, just know that she will be the focal point of the visit. The more Penny goes, she may settle down some. Just think of it as Penny's visit. As long as it benefits Heather, it’s all good. You're a good man, John.

Heather's decline is so heartbreaking. This disease is unbearably cruel in so many ways. 😫

Why does over 31K seem important? Because it proves you are not alone on this journey. ❤

Connection with her pet companion is really good. I'm in an assisted living situation and it's pet friendly. My kitty Piewacket lives with me here. I don't have a spouse or children so I am pretty much alone. I'm 71 years old and my physical health is not good. I can still take care of her and the aides who take care of me like her and play with her when they stop in to help me. Heather is your life partner. Your devotion to her will see you through this. You will keep her in your heart forever. Blessings to both of you.

You did just the right thing for your wife. I did in home care for 20 years specializing in dementia patients. I always told the families "when you've done everything you can do, and can't take anymore, it's time for more extensive 24 hour care" I then came to Idaho to care for my mom. After 7 years (the last two years were unbearable). Finally I had to take her to the nursing home. I felt guilty but I couldn't take anymore. She passed six weeks later. I'm glad she's at peace. Peace be with you❤

I find myself in tears every time I watch your videos. They touch something deep in my heart. I lost my beloved husband in March 2024. He never woke up after his bypass surgery. I had prayed so hard, begged God to let him live no matter what condition he might have been in. I would have taken care of him with all the love in my heart, just to have him by my side a little longer. Your love and devotion to your wife are incredibly moving. Watching the way you care for her, so patiently and tenderly, gives me hope and comfort, even through my own grief. It’s a powerful reminder that true love endures, even in the most difficult of circumstances. You are an inspiration. May you always find strength in the love you share, and may God continue to bless you both with moments of peace, joy, and connection. Please know that your journey touches more lives than you may ever realize.

Keep taking Penny. Animals also go into depression missing loved ones. Help Penny through this adjustment also. 🐶🐾❤️

Did anyone else hear her say "nougat"? Never doubt yourself for caring for her, if you had kept her at home and she got away from you or something you would feel way worse. She's safe and at the end of the day that is what's important. You're doing a great job!
