Tutoring anything, maths included, requires other skills, as well.

1. Breaking complex tasks into small pieces.

2. Organization, more precisely, being able to present those pieces in a progressive and logical way.

3. Communication skills - using the simplest words to get more complex ideas across.

4. A subset of communicating - becoming a good listener, so you can isolate and analyze exactly where the tutee's understanding ends or gets fuzzy, so that point can be strengthened and built upon.

5. Discipline and self control with your thoughts, commentary, and emotions. Also, don't show off. Keep it simple. After all, it's not about you.

6. Be kind and respectful.

These, in addition to that presented will start you on your way to becoming a good tutor or teacher.

I literally just got hired as a math tutor today haha. And this video was uploaded less than an hour ago. Such perfect timing!

Maybe some smaller picture tips I have:
1. If you're really worried about certain aspects of tutoring, e.g. feeling like you don't know enough, anxious about 1-on-1, etc. maybe try something like a tutoring center. I work at Mathnasium rn for some extra money and it is great and a more team focused environment.
2. Try to notice when you're going too fast. Sometimes when I'm talking about something I really like, I go too fast and forget that the student needs to learn, not just be bombarded with the fact that I really like something.
3. Try to remember what it's like to not know something, this is not easy, but it will make you more empathetic and may help you understand what they aren't understanding.
Great video math sorcerer!

I go to the tutoring center a couple days a week and most are very helpful. Sometimes they may not have an answer and I tell them no worries and just move on to a different question. I have an older lady that I really enjoy working with but she is only good with basic algebra, there is another guy thats super smart but gets bored if my homework is too basic. I get that and I tell him no worries and he is off to help the calcII student. So not only is it important that the tutor is a good coach, the student must also be coachable. One more thing....A huge thank you to all the great Math tutors! You're the best! Cheers!

When I decided to homeschool my children I was really anxious about the math part but what you’re saying here is exactly how it’s gone for us! I don’t know/remember much but it turns out that doesn’t matter. We’re doing great learning it together. There’s lots of great resources online and I’m gaining new understanding and appreciation for math, and it’s really helped build my patience which helps in all areas of my life. :)

equally important to knowing the subject is the ability to understand the emotional state of others which will also give you clues to their understanding of the material let alone any chemistry issues they may have with you so as to adjust your attitude. remember you are teaching people and not having a vanity fair of your ego ;-)

Another good video, Sorcerer. I am seeing a theme over several of the latest posts. Many viewers are looking for encouragement to study mathematics. And, I do understand the anguish many people feel undertaking such a difficult course of study.

I am wondering if you could offer a little insensitive for the young aspiring mathematicians? Would you do a video on the prestigious Fields Medal? What it is, how to aquire it, and some of the recent winners of the award and their work?
While I'm too old to receive one, well over 40, just knowing of its existence may inspire a future sorcerer's apprentice!

I can feel the compassion part in your lectures. My math teacher gets frustrated when I make a mistake in answering or attempting a question. Learnt a lot of maths by your lecture. You are the one because of whom I still love maths and will continue doing it throughout my life. Thank you very much

I started tutoring Physics & Math when I was a Junior on college, both freelance and through the Physics Department. Over the years, it's been a good side gig.

Typically, I would work myself out of a job with a given client because their lightbulb would come on after two or three sessions. -- I took that as a good thing; it kept my advertising team busy.

Thank you for the excellent advice on the video. There is one comment that a math tutor (or any tutor ) must NEVER make, and that is, "This is so easy." This type of comment often makes students feel incompetent. Also, a great tutoring strategy is to use what is called "The Socratic Method." By using this method, the tutor asks the student questions about what is being discussed, so that the student is more involved in the assignment. Therefore, the student is more likely to comprehend and retain what he or she learns. As a former tutor, I would use this method. It is extremely successful.

Great advice! How would you define a beginner book? And what makes Lang not the easiest?

Serg Lang book in the video. Those Serg Lang books on eBay are expensive to me. They cost hundreds of dollars there. Came back here long enough to update this. I went over to eBay just now to actually look up Serg Lang. I was wrong about the cost of his books all being hundreds of dollars over there. There was 1 book by him that was 127 dollars. But most of the ones I saw were kind of affordable. They were 30, 55, and even as low as 18 dollars. I think 18 dollars was the cheapest. I saw a Serg Lang book on linear algebra for about 22 dollar that published in 1968. Algebraic Structures by Serg Lang is 78 dollars over there.

Empathic? It might be a good word for what you meant

You don't know the answer, but you can figure it out (maybe together).
