In this short video, I show you a simple way to dig up a small to medium sized tree.

You'll need a shovel/spade and something to cut through the roots (e.g an hand axe or pickaxe)

Step 1: Dig away the soil surrounding the trunk
Step 2: Lean the tree to locate the largest roots
Step 3: Expose the roots
Step 4: Cut through the roots with your axe
Step 5: Repeat until you are through all the roots
Step 6: Remove tree and clean up

great video. I really appreciate how you hit all the key points without dragging it out and keeping the video short. Thank you

This is especially useful when a yard is limited instead of using something with a motor and wheels!

Loppers are very useful for severing roots.

If you have to remove many tree, using a Dyna-Diggr is way easier!

I assume you could just saw away at the roots to detach them? Trying to remove a tree that has taken but don’t want it where it is, and have limited space and don’t have a pickaxe, but don’t want the roots regrowing or sprouting

What if I want to plant a new tree when the dead tree was? Should I dig up all the roots then?

Will your grass grow back? I’m new to this and not sure how that process works

Were you planning on replanting that tree? I removed a Maple tree about that size(4x4 and Strap) and had about as much root. Will it survive? Thanks

For larger tree roots, is it okay to leave them in the ground? Or should I go into the ground and try to either grind them up or dig them out? I'm just trying to plant a new lawn over the area where the tree is.

Thank you. I have a loquat tree that I grew from a baby. About 15 ft tall. Being forced to move, and was worried I'd have to leave the little fella here. He's kind of become my buddy and I've grown attached to him. Didn't want to dig him up if I thought I might kill him. Is there a chance that he dies if I dig him up???

Can you still replant with some dead roots in the ground? I want to take down a smallish live oak that is too close to my driveway and replant a crape myrtle variety in its place.
